        This study was conducted to identify the seasonal occurrence patterns of peach pyralid moth, Dichocroscis punctiferalis (Guenee), and persimmon fruit moth, Satthmopoda masinissa Meyrick, in persimmon orchards in four different regions, Ulsan and Jinyeong in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Naju and Yeongam in Jeollanam-do. Three pheromone traps (Delta trap, GreeAgro Tech) for each moth species were installed at each site and checked with 1 week intervals. Peach pyralid moth and persimmon fruit moth occurred in all four study sites. Two moth species exhibited two distinctive peaks, but there were some time differences in the peak among sites. Peach pyralid moth first occurred in late May to early June in Ulsan, Jinyeong and Naju but occurred in late July in Yeongam. Overall, the first peak appeared in mid- to late June but the time of the second peak varied widely among sites. Persimmon fruit moth first occurred in early to mid-June in Ulsan, Jinyeong and Naju but occurred in mid-May in Yeongam. The first peak appeared in mid- to late June in Ulsan, Jinyeong and Naju but it appeared in late May in Yeongam. The time of the second peak was around late August in the study sites except Ulsan where the second peak time was in late September.

        This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of single and combination use of N. californicus and N. womersleyi for control of Tetranychus urticae. The experiment was conducted with 5 replications in kidney bean leaf disc (2.5cm diameter) at 25℃, 60-70% RH, a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. The inoculation ratio was 5:1 for T. urticae:pytoseiidae mite and treatments are: a, N. californicus:T. urticae (4 adult female:20 adult female) b, N. womersleyi:T. urticae (4:20) c, (N. californicus+N. womersleyi):T. urticae ((2+2):20) d, Only T. ulticae (20). T. urticae population became significantly lower in the treatment plots than in the control plot but the higher egg number of T. urticae was observed in the treatment "b" plot than in "a" and "c" plots. In the "c" plot, lower number of N. womersleyi was observed than N. californicus. The result indicates that single use of N. californicus and combination use of N. californicus and N. womersleyi were more effective than single use of N. womersleyi but, there was no significantly difference between single use of N. californicus and combination use of N. californicus and N. womersleyi for control of T. urticae. Also, N. californicus appears to interfere or outcompete N. womersleyi.

        Two cherry tomato plant cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Miller, cultivars ‘Koko’ and ‘Pepe’) were supplied with high (395 ppm), medium (266 ppm) and low (199 ppm) concentrations of nitrogen to determine the influence of nitrogen fertilization on development, cultivar preference and honeydew production by greenhouse whiteflies, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). The nitrogen, protein, andchlorophyll content of tomato leaves were higher in the high nitrogen supplied plants than in the medium or low nitrogen supplied plants, but the sugar content showed an inverse relationship. The developmental times of eggsand nymphs decreased as the nitrogen concentrations increased in both cultivars. The preference of T. vaporariorum was compared by counting the number of eggs deposited on leaves in choice and non-choice tests. In the non-choice test, no significant nitrogen treatment effects were observedbut the upper plant stratum was preferred for egg laying. In the choice test, there were significant main effects of cultivar and nitrogen concentration. T. vaporariorum laid eggs more on leaves of plants with higher nitrogen at the upper stratum. In both experiments, T, vaporariorum preferred the ‘Koko’ cultivar to the ‘Pepe’ cultivar. The honeydew production of T. vaporariorum nymphs increased with decreasing nitrogen treatment concentrations. The largest honeydew production was detected in the ‘Pepe’ cultivar grown at low nitrogen concentration. It is concluded that cultivar ‘Pepe’ had an advantage over ‘Koko’ in term of T. vaporariorum management program in tomato greenhouses.

        Members of Sparassidae of Araneae are small to large sized (3-25mm) huntsman spiders (Jäger 1999). In Korea, there have been recorded 5 species, Heteropoda venatoria (Linnaeus, 1767), Micrommata virescens (Clerck, 1757), Sinopoda koreana (Paik, 1968), Sinopoda stellatops Jäger & Ono, 2002 and Thelcticopis severa (L.Koch, 1875), belonging to 3 genera (Paik, 1968, 1978, Namkung, 2002, 2003, You and Kim, 2002). In the course of survey for the spider fauna of Mt. Sobaek (1,439m elevation) located in Punggi-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do during 2007 to 2008, one of the 16 National Parks in Korea, 2 matured females of Sinopoda forcipata (Karsch,1881) which has been known to distribute in China and Japan were collected by pitfall traps. S.forcipata is a newly recorded species for the Korean spider fauna. Female of S.forcipata was described with some natural history including vertical distribution at mountain and seasonal fluctuation, and compared distribution and habitat of 3 Korean Sinopoda species referring former reports from Korea.

        This study was conducted to determine whether trichome density affects the oviposition behavior of adult female Tetranychus urticae Koch on host plant leaves. Experiments were conducted with twenty replications on the leaf discs of each plant (Pear, 'Niitaka'; Apple, 'Fuji'; Strawberry, 'Meahyang'; 3cm diameter) at 25℃, 60-70% RH and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. One female T. urticae was placed on each disc. The number and locations of laid eggs were recorded at 24 h intervals until T. urticae died. The trichomes were distributed along the midrib of abaxial surface of pear leaves but were evenly distributed on that of apple and strawberry leaves. Eggs were mostly laid along the midrib of pear leaf disc, but eggs were laid not only along the midrib but also randomly over the leaf disc of apple and strawberry. Therefore, it appeared that T. urticae preferred to lay eggs on the specific location where trichomes were densely distributed. Further study is needed to quantify how different distribution patterns of T. urticae eggs on different plant leaves affect the efficacy of predatory mites to control T. urticae.

        This study was conducted to explore if the ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) can be used as an indicator classifying habitat types. Thirteen land use types were selected as survey sites in Jeonju. Ground beetles were collected by 3 pitfall traps (15 cm diameter) for each site from June 20 to September 22, 2008. Pitfall traps were replaced at one month interval. Total 919 ground beetles of 31 species belonging to 17 genera were collected. Land use types were classified and ordinated by two-way indicator species analysis and detrended correspondence analysis. Land use types were classified and ordinated into two major groups, forest and non-forest, by Synuchus nitidus and Dolichus halensis. Two major groups were subdivided into 4 end groups; forest, riverside, upland and other sites. Other sites group including 4 sites; levee, public garden, outfield and manufacturing area were not coincided with land use types. Nevertheless, ground beetles appear to be used as indicators of habitat types.

        The objective of this study was to evaluate the effective inoculation position of Neoseiulus californicus for control of Tetranychus urticae on apple branch. This study was conducted under green house conditions. N. californicus was inoculated at different position (Top, Middle and Bottom) of apple branch with a 20:1 ratio (T. urticae:N. californicus). Overall, N. californicus significantly reduced T. urticae numbers in the treatment branches than in the control branch. At 10th day, the T. urticae population was most significantly reduced in the treatment ‘Top’ in which N. californicus were inoculated on the leaf positioned in the top of a branch than in other treatments. At 20th day, most of T. urticae were exterminated in all treatment branches. The daily movement of N. californicus and T. urticae,and their coexistence on apple branch was monitored. Adult N. californicus disappeared from the branch as soon as T. urticae were exterminated in the treatment branches. The result indicates that N. californicus disperse downwards more than upwards in the tree, and the most effective inoculation position for N. californicus for control of T. urticae is the leaves positioned in the top of a branch.

        The study was conducted to explore whether environmental differences, in this case the physical characteristics of abaxial leaf surfaces of strawberry cultivars ('Maehyang' and 'Sulhyang' cultivars), affect the functional response of adult female N. californicus preying on immature stages (egg, larva and nymph) of T. urticae. We also evaluated the functional response of N. californicus to eggs of T. urticae at different temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35℃). We conducted a logistic regression of the proportion of prey consumed as a function of initial prey density to identify functional response types, and used nonlinear squares regression and the random predator equation to estimate attack rates and handling times. The functional response of adult female N. californicus to T. urticae was not influenced by non-glandular trichomes and epicuticular waxes on the abaxial leaf but was affected by temperature. Overall, the functional response of adult female N. californicus exhibited a type 2 functional response to T.urticae. The handling time of N. californicus was highest (1.9970) against T. urticae nymphs. The attack rate did not change much at 15-30℃, but the handling time decreased linearly with increasing temperature. At 35℃, the attack rate was highest (0.1876) and the handling time was lowest (0.9296). The results of this study may be used to evaluate the potential of N. californicus to suppress T. urticae and to estimate parameters for relevant prey-predator models.

        The European red mite (ERM), Panonychus ulmi, and the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus uritcae, are serious mite pests in pome fruit orchards worldwide. Abundance and species composition of spider mites in orchard ecosystem have been changed historically in many countries. To illustrate the cause for the historical changes in species composition between ERM and TSSM is an interesting topic. The abundances of the two mite populations have been largely changed in Korean apple orchards: ERM was dominant until 1970s, TSSM has been dominant from 1980s, and then ERM has increased abundantly in some orchards in recent years (Lee, 1990; Kim and Lee, 2005). In apple orchards in Japan, Amphitetranychus viennensis outbreaks occurred immediately after the use of organophosphates in the early 1950, and then, ERM became dominant species on apple until the 1960s followed by TSSM abundance from the late 1970s to the early 1980; Recently, ERM again increasing in IPMadopted apple orchards (Reviewed in Morimoto et al., 2006). Kishimoto (2002) showed changes in the species composition of spider mites caused by different pesticide spray programs in Japanese pear orchards. Pesticides can become an important factor that affects mite species composition of mites through the process of resistance development and the removal of natural enemies. Pesticide resistance and the removal of natural enemies can explain the outbreak of spider mites in orchards, but do not fully explain the changes in species composition of mites. Morimoto et al. (2006) reported a possible exclusion of ERM by TSSM through interspecific interaction via their web: the complicated web created by TSSM increases the mortality of little webspinning species such as ERM. Morimoto et al. (2006) stated that the change in mite species composition can occur as a result of interspecific association between spider mites via their webs, without pesticide applications or the presence of natural enemies. However, their hypothesis does not explain the dominance of ERM in orchards under lower pesticide pressure. Also, Belczewski and Harmsen (1997) concluded that the application of additional or supplemental amounts of a Phylloplane fungus (Alternaria alternata) to apple leaves enhanced the population growth of TSSM compared to that of ERM. However, this does not explain the dominance of TSSM in orchards under heavy pesticide pressure where Phylloplane fungal population would be lowered by fungicides, and the dominance of ERM in unsprayed orchards where Phylloplane fungal population would be abundant because of no fungicide application. The change in species composition among spider mites can not be projected with any single factor. It is required to examine all possible combinations of factors involving. Until now the change in abundance between ERM and TSSM has not been examined comprehensively. Therefore, we examine possible changes in population abundance between REM and TSSM with some assumptions. Also, case studies that deal with long-term and short-term changes between the two mites are presented.

        The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is one of major pests in greenhouse strawberry. Two predator mites, Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) and Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias-Henriot), have been widely used for control of T. urticae because they have good functional and numerical responses and searching behaviors. The study of single species releasing and combined releasing of two predatory mites, N. californicus and P. persimilis, was conducted on connected strawberry leaves. The experiments were run under laboratory conditions, 24±1oC, 50-65% RH, and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. The excised leaf disk (diameter 3cm) of two strawberry varieties – Maehyang, Sulhyang– were placed upside down on a water-saturated cotton pad in an aluminum pan (width × length 17.4 × 21.5 cm). Twenty leaf disks were placed on each experimental set and the disks (width × length 4×5 cm.) were connected with each other for dispersing of T. urticae and its predatory mite. There were four different experiments – two strawberry varieties and two treatments (releasing single predatory mite, releasing two predator mites). The experiment sets were covered with plastic cage to protect from invading other insects and mites. All life stages of T. urticae and predatory mites were recorded until all mites were vanished. The data were transformed by ln (x+1). Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to compare the temporal variation in the overall T. urticae and predatory mite density. The average number of T. urticae per leaf arena was significantly different among treatments in Sulhyang (Treatment, df=3, 196, F=17.86, P=0.0001; Time, df=6, 1176, F=47.76, P=0.0001; Time ×Treatment, df=18, 1176, F=22.06, P=0.0001) and in Maehyang (Treatment, df=3, 196, F=42.07, P=0.0001; Time, df=6, 1176, F=64.51, P=0.0001; Time x Treatment, df=18, 1176, F=24.19, P=0.0001). When N. californicus was introduced to P. persimilis system with diminishing prey, P. persimilis population increased more rapidly than N. alifornicus but P. persimilis was displaced by N. californicus. In single or combined releasing system, N. californicus persisted longer after prey depletion than P. persimilis. We examined population growth of P. persimilis and N. californicus in single and combined predatory mite released system with diminishing prey.

        The developmental time and survival of immature stages of N. californicus were studied under laboratory conditions at nine constant temperatures (12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 38, 40℃), 60-70% RH, and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. The total developmental period decreased with increasing temperature between 12 and 32℃, and increased beyond 32℃. Total developmental period of immature stages was longest at 12℃ (18.38 days) and shortest at 32℃ (2.98 days). The cumulative mortality of N. californicus was lowest at 24℃ (4.5%) and highest at 38℃ (15.2%). The normalized cumulative frequency distribution of developmental times for each life stage was fitted to the three-parameter Weibull function (r2=0.91~0.93). The relationship between temperature and developmental rate was fitted by five nonlinear development rate models (Logan 6, Lactin 1, 2, and Briere 1,2). The nonlinear shape of temperature development was best described by the Lactin 1 model (r2=0.98). The determined lower developmental temperature thresholds could be used to predict the occurrence, number of generation and population dynamics of N.californicus on fruit orchards and greenhouse

The investigation was conducted by examining two or three times per week and all life stages of T. urticae and predatory mite were reported until all leaves were occupied by mites. Repeated-measures data were analyzed by MANOVA. The average number of T.urticae per cm2 was no significant difference between two strawberry varieties in no predatory mite system (F=0.65, p>0.4195). Although the external structure of two strawberry varieties is very similar the dispersal rate of T. urticae was different between two strawberry varieties in all experiment sets. However, the number of T. urticae per cm2 was no significant different (df=1, F=1.28, p>0.2628). Within the same strawberry variety T.urticae populations among experiment sets were significant different (df=2, F=14.95, p<0.0001 Seolhyang, df=2, F=15.03, p<0.0001 Maehyang).

        담배포장에서 담배나방의 발생은 조식 및 만식 재배구 모두에서 2 또는 3개의 뚜렷한 최성기를 보였다. 반면에 Campoleitis chlorideae는 담배 조식구에서는 담배나방의 두번째 최성기 직후 짧은 기간동안 발생하였으며 만식구에서는 담배나방 유웅이 존재하는 한 발생하였다. 만식구에서의 담배나방 발생은 조식구에서보다 많았다. 4가지 담배 품종중 NC-744에서 담배나방 유충의 발생이 비교적 컸다. 그러나, 기생벌의 발생은 Burley-21과 NC-82에서 많았다. 담배나방 유충의 포장에서의 인위적인 방사 및 재포획법에 의한 결과는 C. chlorideae의 활동은 6월말부터 9월초까지 보였으며 7월초 부터 8월말까지는 비교적 높은 밀도로 발생하였다. C. chlorideae의 담배나방에 대한 생물적방제 수단으로서의 가치평가를 위한 포장내 소규모 케이지 실험결과 방사밀도가 높을수록(암컷 4마리/2 ) 유충기생률이 높고(86.1%) 담배잎의 피해는 감소함을 보였다.(8.7%) 무처리구에서의 담배잎의 피해는 상당히 높았으며(23.2%) 살충제처리구에서 피해가 가장 낮았다.(1.6%)

        점박이응애(Tetranychus urncae)의 알밀도(10~80), 공간분포〈집중 빛 균일분포) 및 서석면적크기 (3, 9, 16 )에 따른 긴털이리응애(Amblyseius longispinosus)의 가능반응을 연구하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 긴털이리웅애의 점박이응애 발견효율은 밀도와 공간분포의 영향을 받았으나, 면적의 영향은 없었다. 포식량과 피식자간의 거리와는 매우 높은 역상관관계를 보였다(r=강.85, p=0.0001). 포식반응은 제2형의 기능반응을 보였다. 긴털이리응애의 기능반응은 random predator equation으로 잘 설명되었으며, 탐색률은 피식자의 집중분포하에서 반응면적에 따라 0.1030 - 0.1504였고 균일분포하에서는 0.0546~0.0276였다.

        Exserohilum turcicum is considered serious destructive disease of maize (Zea mays L.) in North Korea. This study aimed to understand genetic inheritance and combining ability of newly bred lines of maize tolerant to E. turcicum by diallel crosses. Three diallel sets for two different ecological regions and one agronomic trait; eastern (E), northern (N) and stay green (SG) involving 29 inbred lines were tested in eight locations of 2000 and 2001. E. turcicum infections were under natural conditions, respectively. Lines used were selected for high yield potential in test crosses with good agronomic traits and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Selection for race specific high resistance to biotic stresses was avoided to select quantitatively inherited genes. Host plant responses to E. turcicum were rated on a scale of 1 (highly tolerant) to 9 (highly susceptible). Highly significant variations were recorded in all trials. General combining ability (GCA) mean square was roughly twice that of specific combining ability (SCA). The genotype (G) by environment (E) interaction was highly significant. The overall results of genetic studies in three diallel sets show that genetic control for inbred tolerance to E. turcicum is polygenic and quantitatively inherited. New inbreds; E-3, N-1 and SG-4 confer better tolerance to E. turcicum than the widely used inbreds; Mo17, and B73. Proper use of genetic information from this study shall increase of corn production under high E. turcicum infection in the Far Eastern Regions of Korea and China.
