현대 도시는 살아있는 생명체처럼 역동적으로 변화하고 발전하고 있다. 급속한 도시의 발전은 도시 내부의 환경적 문제를 가져왔으며 도시에 발생한 문제를 해결하기 위한 실천적 대안으로 그린웨이가 등장하였다. 선형의 녹지공간으로 불리 우는그린웨이는 도시 생태계의 중추인 그린 인프라스트럭처로써 인간의 삶의 질을 향상시키기 위해 다목적 다기능의 역할을한다. 이렇게 도시를 하나의 생태계로 인식하고 자연 환경과의 유기적인 통합을 강조하는 관점은 랜드스케이프 어바니즘의사조와 일맥상통한다.이에 본 연구는 랜드스케이프 어바니즘의 관점으로 도시생태계에서 그린웨이가 갖는 다양한 기능과 역할에 대해 논의해보았다. 그린웨이는 랜드스케이프 어바니즘의 “수평성”의 개념에 근거하여 하이브리드적 도시 경관을 창조함으로써 도시지역에건강한 거주(서식)공간을 만드는 역할을 할 수 있다. 이로써 그린웨이는 랜드스케이프 어바니즘이 실현될 수 있는 그린 인프라스트럭처로 작용한다. 특히, 그린웨이는 생태통로의 개념에서 발전한 것이기에 지역간의 연결성 및 도시 오픈스페이스와의 접근성을향상시키는 기능을 하는 도시 생태계의 유기적 구조체의 역할을 한다. 또한, 도시 환경의 변화와 생태적 교란을 방어하고여과하는 기능을 하는 그린웨이는 시간의 흐름을 반영한 “프로세스” 중심의 설계를 통해 공간의 유연성을 높여 도시 생태계의변화와 천이를 담아낸다. 이러한 그린웨이의 역할을 극대화시키기 위해서는 그린웨이의 계획 및 관리 과정이 랜드스케이프어바니즘에서 제시하는 여러 영역간의 협업을 통한 “테크닉”과정으로 전략화 되어야 한다. 그렇게 될 때 그린웨이는 도시민에게다양한 여가활동을 제공할 수 있으며 나아가 지역적 경제성장 등 부가가치를 창출하는 그린 인프라스트럭쳐로의 역할을다 할 수 있을 것이다.이와 같이 도시 그린웨이는 랜드스케이프 어바니즘의 관점에서 도시생태계의 다목적·다기능성 주요작동요소로써 도시생태계의 지속가능성을 추구한다. 따라서 도시 생태계에서 그린웨이의 역할에 대한 랜드스케이프 어바니즘적 논의는 그린웨이가도시민의 쾌적한 거주환경을 제공하는 전략적 시스템으로 발전할 수 있는 기반을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

Modern cities have changed and developed dynamically like other organisms in the ecosystem. Rapid urbanization have caused many environmental problems and greenways have been suggested as a practical framework to resolve the problems. A greenway is often called a linear green space that can play an important role as nature’s super infrastructure and improve our quality of life if it is considered the core of an urban ecosystem. This idea is in accordance with landscape urbanism, which considers a citya living ecosystem and emphasizes systematic integration between the city and nature. The purpose of this study is to investigate the multiple functions and benefits of greenways in an urban ecosystem from the perspective of landscape urbanism. Greenways can help build a healthy community (habitats) in an urban area while creating a hybrid urban landscape using the concept of ‘horizontality’ in landscape urbanism. As a green infrastructure, greenways can be a proper resource to practice landscape urbanism. Because of the characteristics stemmed from the eco-corridor, greenways can enhance the connectivity and accessability between urban open spaces and natural areas. In addition, they play the roles of ecological functions such as barrier and filter in order to prevent environmental variations and ecological disturbances. So, designing greenways ought to reflect such a “process” in association with time, to illustrate variation and succession in the urban ecosystem. To maximize these functions, planning and maintaining greenways requires strong collaboration among stakeholders, which could be called “technique” in landscape urbanism. To that end, greenways as green infrastructures could play a role in providing various sources for recreation to the community and in increasing regional economic growth. Urban greenways are designed to pursue multi-functions and multi-objectives to enhance the sustainability of an urban ecosystem and are strongly correlated to principles of landscape urbanism. This will offer an opportunity for landscape urbanism to be used as a strategic system to provide amenities to the community in modern society.
