이 연구는 한자 교육의 필요성과 당위성을 주장하는 기존의 논의들이 염두에 두지 않았던 문제들에 대해 고찰해 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공함으로써 한자 교육의 새로운 방향성을 모색하게 하는 계기를 마련하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 한자 교육이 하나의 이론으로서 그 위상을 갖추기 위해서는 언어적, 인지적, 발 달적, 과학적 측면에서 타당한 논거들이 연구되고 제시되어야 한다. 먼저, 기호론 적 측면에서 한글과 한자를 둘러싼 기호 표현과 기호 내용의 관계가 한자 교육을 통해 어떻게 원활하게 형성이 될 수 있는지를 밝혀야 할 것이다. 둘째, 한자 읽기 가 ‘의미에 대한 사고 과정’이라면 한자를 통하여 한자가 의미의 내면화에 어떻게 기여를 하며, 그것이 얼마나 효율적인지 명확히 밝힐 필요가 있다. 셋째, 한자의 읽기, 쓰기 교육이 학생들의 문식성 발달 수준을 고려하여 실시되고 있는지 되돌 아보아야 한다. 넷째, 한자 문식성의 발달 정도와 언어 능력 간의 상관관계를 객관 적이고 신뢰성 있는 실험으로 검증할 필요가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to find new way on Chinese character education by providing the opportunities to think of unconcerned problems about the necessities and appropriateness of it. The logical grounds for the argument of the Chinese character education should be presented in linguistic, cognitive, developmental, and scientific fields to enhance the theoretical position. First of all, the basic study on the Chinese character education has to clarify semiotic contents in education. Secondly, there are necessities how the Chinese character education can contribute to the internalization of meaning if that is the cognitive process for the meaning. Thirdly, the Chinese character education should be examined in reading and writing as considering the literacy development. Finally, there are necessities experimental verifications about corelation between the development of Chinese character literacy and the linguistic faculty.
