Culture Education Using a Movie in Korea Language Education
The content of culture education in that of Korean language now needs a change. Korean language education, which started with curiosity aroused by the Korean wave, is now carried out for such various reasons as academic purpose, employment, immigrant and others. Therefore, the content of culture education needs to deepen more. Most studies agreed that culture education is important. But there are not many specific studies about how to teach culture depending on its type. On this, this paper was to suggest teaching method using a movie ,among various media, in dealing with funeral culture for intermediate and advanced learners. A funeral includes such various cultures that it is an important material for figuring out spiritual and social life of people of the time. Formed based on a long history and changes, the present funeral custom is worth looking out for the purpose of Korean language education. In order to deal with such funeral culture, I was to suggest teaching method using a movie, which showed effects in many parts when I analyzed disposition of learners who live in the media age. It is said that a movie 'Festival', which was selected for this paper, showed Korean awareness of death like a documentary, with the main awareness that a funeral service is not just burying a body but meeting among the living, the dead and the left. In addition, 'Festival' makes it possible for us to take a look at a large family, a rare family type in modern society and look at three generations through an extended family. However, there are several problems because of the characteristics of a movie as the media. Above all, classroom environment for showing a movie is needed and also about two hours-running time is a problem. Accordingly, film cutting is inevitable, but teachers cannot help but do the work and it requires skills. For film cutting, the storyline of a movie should be considered, so the work is not easy. It is a task to do in future presenting continuously methods of teaching about other specific cultural items in addition to funeral culture. The study about teaching specific cultural items so far is inadequate, so starting with funeral culture, teaching methods for various cultural items will have to be suggested.
