이 논문은 안익태가 미국, 신시내티 음악원으로 유학가는 과정과 신시내티에서 필라델피 아로 전학하는 과정을 살펴본다. 미국 국립자료보관서(NARA)에서 새롭게 발견된 안익태의 입국 서류와 미 노동부 이민국의 서류는 지금까지 알려지지 않은 안익태의 초기 미국 생활을 비교적 자세하게 재구성할 수 있게 한다. 이 자료들에 의하면 안익태가 신시내티 음악원에서 수업료 면제를 받으며 공부했으나 음악원의 운영 주체가 바뀌면서 안익태에 대한 경제적 지 원이 사라졌고 미국 이민국은 안익태가 불법으로 체류하고 있다고 판단하여 추방 절차를 개 시한다. 안익태는 필라델피아의 템플대학의 음대로 전학가면서 추방 위기에서 벗어난다. 이 민국 조사로 압박을 받으면서도 안익태는 신시내티에서 멀지 않은 작은 도시 핀들레이의 교 회 초청으로 연주활동을 하면서 경제적인 도움을 받는다. 또한 이번 연구는 지금까지 잘못 알려진 안익태의 커티스 음악원 수학과 유명 지휘자인 프리츠 라이너와의 만남 등이 사실이 아니라는 점을 확인해준다. 반면에 입국 서류에 포함된 그의 호적은 논란이 있던 그의 탄생 연도가 1906년임을 보여주기도 한다.

This paper tries to reconstruct EakTai Ahn's life at Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. Newly found documents of Ahn's Immigration Arrival files and Immigration and Naturalization Service at NARA, Washington show how Ahn came to the Conservatory of Cincinnati and why he was investigated for illegal stay in America. According to these documents he was supported financially by the Conservatory for the first year. As the Conservatory reduced the financial support later on, Ahn had to work for living and tuition. There are newspaper articles of Findlay, Ohio that tell us Ahn was invited several times to the churches of the city to have cello recitals, which obviously helped him financially. The Presbyterian and Methodist churches of Findlay was especially interested in him, because Ahn was from PyungYang, Korea where American foreign missionaries were sent.
