슈만의《4번 교향곡》(d단조, op. 120)은 “한 악장으로 구성된 교향곡”이라는, 그 이전까 지의 교향곡 문헌에서 유례를 찾을 수 없는 획기적인 아이디어로 슈만이 남긴 교향곡 중에서 가장 독창적이라는 평가를 받고 있다. 특히 이 곡은 슈만 생존 시부터 현재에 이르기까지 작 품의 1버전(1841년)과 2버전(1851년)에 대한 찬·반 논란이 팽팽한 가운데 그에 대한 배경 과 작품의 양식적 특성에 대한 다양한 관점의 분석이 이루어지고 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 선 행연구에서 도출된 주장들을 검증하고, 설명하며, 수정하면서 비판적으로 수용하였다.

Schumann's Symphony no. 4, “symphony in a single movement”, is considered to be artistically unique and innovate in symphonic literature with epoch-making idea among his symphonies. Particularly since when his survival up to date, controversy about the first version(1841) and the second version(1851) of Symphony no. 4 has been tightened. In dispute about Symphony no. 4, there are analyses about academic background and special characteristics from various kinds of view. In this paper, the results and comments from preceding researches are verified, explained, revised and at the same time accepted critically.
