이상근(1922-2000)의 연가곡집《가을 저녁의 시》는 프랑스 상징주의의 영향을 받은 김춘수 (1922-2004)의 초기 두 시집에서 가사를 발췌한 것이다. 8곡으로 이루어진 이 연가곡집에서 이상근 은 김춘수의 초기 시적세계를 함축적으로 표현하고 있다. 실존의 비참함과 무한세계의 동경, 그러나 현실을 벗어날 수 없는 인간인식의 한계와 구원에 대한 갈망이 연가곡집의 시적 내용이다.
8곡의 곡들은 모두 첫 곡 <언덕에서>와 의미적으로 연관되어 있으며, 흘러가는 무상한 존재양식 을 형상화 하는 모토동기(F-E-D-C)를 통해 음악 내재적으로도 연결되어 있다. 이 음형에서 이끌어 지는 2도, 3도, 4도의 음정조직이 각각 동기적 작업을 통해 전 사이클에서 선율과 화음의 주요 재료 로 사용되며 시적의미를 형상화한다.
각 곡들에서는 새야화현과 같은 한국 음악적인 요소와 서양의 현대적인 기법들을 혼용하여, 각 각의 시적 의미에 맞게 다양한 음악어법들이 사용되었다.

Sang-Geun Lee's Art Song and Poem: with the focus on his Song Cycle《가을저녁의 시》 (Poems of the Autumn Evening)

The lyrics of Sang-Geun Lee's(1922-2000) Song Cycle 《가을저녁의 시》(Poems of the Autumn Evening) are excerpted from the early two poetry books by Kim Chun Su(1922-2004) who is influenced by French Symbolism. The Poems of the Autumn Evening are composed of eight songs, which express mourning of human existence and its limitation as well as man's seeking of the ideal world and desire for redemption.
All of the songs in this Song Cycle utilize various musical techniques of both Korean and western modern music to express the unique theme of each of the poems while musically being connected through a motto motive.
