이상근(1922-2000)이 ‘도전과 실험정신’의 작곡가이자 시대를 앞선 음악교육가로 자리매김하게 된 것은 1959년 9월부터 1960년 8월까지 1년간에 걸친 미국 테네시주 내슈빌시의 피바디 사범대 학에서의 연수와 1960년 여름에 참가한 탱글우드음악제를 통해서였다. 하지만 ‘피바디 프로젝트’에 선발된 이상근의 미국에서의 음악활동은 거의 알려지지 않았다. 피바디사범대학 체제기간 중 이상 근의 <교향곡 2번> 4악장, ‘한국선율에 의한 서완조,’ <피아노 3중주곡 2번> 등 세 작품이 연주되었 다. 특히 탱글우드음악제 기간 아론 코플랜드에게 수학하면서 작곡한 <피아노 3중주곡 2번>의 초연 을 비롯하여 이상근의 작품들이 미국에서 연주된 배경과 그 의미를 조명하고자 한다. 또한 피바디 연수를 통해 구체화된 음악교육관이 귀국 후 저술한 그의 음악교과서에 어떻게 나타났는지를 알아 본다.

Although Sang Keun Lee's (1922-2000) one-year residency at the Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee, had significant impact on his musical career as a Korean composer and music educator, his musical activities during this period has remained unknown. As a participant in the Peabody Project, sponsored by the US government, Lee was recognized a burgeoning Korean composer and three of his compositions, Andante on a Korean Theme(1955), the 4th movement of Symphony No. 2(1958), and Music for Piano, Violin and Violoncello(1960) were performed. This article also uncovers the history of the premiere of Music for Piano, Violin and Violoncello at the end of the Tanglewood Summer Music Festival, 1960 where he studied with Aaron Copland.
