이 글은 정치의 통속적인 정의를 재검토하고 재조명하여 남명의 정치와의 관련성을 부각시키면서 그러한 맥락에서의 연구 성과를 종합적으로 재평가하려는 목적을 가지고 있다. 즉, 정치란 무엇인가를 새롭게 생각해보면 호모 폴리티쿠스인 남명에 대한 새로운 인식의 지평이 열릴 것을 기대해 마지않는다. 예를 들어, 벼슬에 나아가지 않은 남명의 출처가 정치적 행위의 일부였음을 인식하는 일이 가장 기본적인 단초가 될 것이다. 호모폴리티쿠스 남명의 총체성을 파악하는 일은 또한 텍스트적인 논쟁과 콘텍스트 구성과 관련된 복잡성을 넘어서서 새롭고 건설적인 방법론적 혁신을 필요로 한다. 이를 위해 두 가지 방법론을 제안하여 새로운 연구 방향 정립에 기여하는 것을 목표로 한다.
제 I 장에서는 정치 현상을 보다 세속적이고 일상적인 차원으로 들여다보고 그에 걸맞은 정치의 정의를 도출하고자 한다. 그 결과로써 정치가 포괄하는 범주가 보다 더 광범위해지고 그 안에서의 질서를 새로운 분류로 구분지어 보고자 한다. 이 시도는 남명의 글과 행위의 많은 부분이 정치의 범주에 반드시 귀속되어 있고 따라서 박병련이 주장한 대로 정치학적 프레임은 남명을 연구하는데 필연적이라는 것을 재삼 강조하기 위함이다.
제 II 장에서는 시도된 새 정의에 따라 남명과 관련된 정치 분야에서의 연구 성과를 회고 하고 그 동향에 대한 종합적인 평가를 내리고자 한다.
제 III 장에서는 연구 성과에 대한 바람직하고 긍정적인 경향에 대해 두 가지 도움이 되는 방법론을 제안하고자 한다.
남명을 계승한 후대 남명학파들이 정치 일선에서 중요한 역할을 하였다는 것은 우연이 아니다. 이는 정치적 인간으로서의 남명의 족적, 사상이나 가르침, 그리고 정치 행위 등이 지대한 영향을 미친 결과라고 봐야 할 것이다.

The purpose of this paper is three-fold: 1) to assess research papers written on the sixteenth century Great Teacher Cho Sik(曹植, 1501~1572, referred by his nickname Nam Myung from here on), which focus on political aspects of his life; 2) to find out why such research papers are scarce; and 3) to suggest how the current state of the discipline can be rejuvenated. Despite two previous reviews lamented on the scarcity of political analyses of Nam Myung, the results are positive but not satisfactory. They are positive in that a number of research efforts have in recent years increased, political scientists by training have appeared in the discipline, and some analysts began to examine not only Nam Myung's political thoughts but also his other political aspects of his life. They are not satisfactory for the number of research outputs are still not many compared to those of education, literature, and history.
The paper argues that the main reason for the scarcity is due to the fact that people in general and political scientists, both oriental and western in particular narrowly define politics. As a result, scholars on Nam Myung have failed to grasp the totality of Homo Politicus Nam Myung. Thus this paper offers a new definition of politics: politics is a phenomenon which results from actions to handle collective interests. Political actions in turn consist of meta-systemic utterances and writings, systemic utterances, writings, and actions as office-holders or power holders, and off-the-system utterances, writings, and actions. It is the third type of political action that promises abundant contemplation on Nam Myung's political behaviors, especially political criticism in the form of petitions.
The paper also suggests two methodological tools that may enrich these endeavors to enlighten Homo Politicus Nam Myung. One is the method of consilience amongst otherwise idiosyncratic academic fields. Modern academic training programs produce tunnel-visioned scholars most of whom do not know other fields than their own. Consilience amongst various specialties is therefore necessary as well as inevitable. The other is Quentin Skinner's methodology which helps us rethink the debates within and without textualists and contextualists. He has argued that utterances represented in historical texts become knowable only if we recover illocutionary forces of those utterances. These suggested tools together with our new definition of politics will expand our intellectual horizon so as to meet a truly political Nam Myung.
