이 논문은 여성사 연구 동향에 관한 역사적 고찰이다. 1960년대 후반 이후 여성 역사가들은 개인적이고 집단적인 여성의 삶과 그들의 체험에 대해서 지속적으로 연구해왔다. 그들은 또한 과거로부터 여성들의 역사적 저술들을 발굴했고, 고대로 거슬러 올라가기까지 여성 역사의 전통을 수립했다. 그러나 매우 중요한 인상이 남는데, 그것은 여성들이 역사의 주류 밖에 위치한다는 것이다. 여성사는 근본적으로 역사로부터의 여성의 부재를 수정하는 데 관심을 두었다. 그러므로 여성사 기술의 목적은 여성을 역사에로 회복시키고, 역사를 여성에게로 회복시키는 것이다.
한편 1980년대 중반에 젠더 개념이 부각되었고, 젠더가 역사 내에서 분석의 비판적 범주가 되어야 한다는 주장이 대두되었다. 그리고 분리된 여성의 역사는 있을 수 없다고 주장되었다. 새로운 역사는 근본적으로 성(性)들 간의 변화하는 관계에 초점을 맞추어 전개되어야 한다는 것이다. 젠더 역사의 적합성에 대한 논쟁은 계속되고 있다.
만일 전통적인 방식의 역사 기술이 ‘그의 이야기’에 중심을 두고 있다면 이제 ‘그녀의 이야기’를 찾아내어 들을 필요가 있다. 여성사를 연구하고 기술하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 왜냐하면 자료와 증거가 희박하기 때문이다. 그것은 때로 행간(行間)을 읽는 역사적 상상력을 필요로 한다. 남성과 여성을 모두 포함하는 균형 잡힌 역사를 기술하는 것은 역사가의 중요한 과제일 것이다.

This article is a historical research of the recent trends in the study of women’s history. Since the late 1960s historians of women have continually investigated the individual and collective lives of women and their experiences. They also recovered women’s historical writings from the past and established traditions of women’s history dating back to ancient times. An overarching impression remains, however, that women are somehow situated outside the mainstream of history. Women’s history was primarily concerned to correct the absence of women from history. The aim of writing women’s history is therefore to recover women to history and to recover history to women.
Meanwhile, during the middle of the 1980s the idea of gender arose, and the argument that gender must become a critical category of analysis within history came to the fore. And it was asserted that there could be no separated history of women; a new history must evolve that focused primarily on the changing relations between the sexes. The controversy on the legitimacy of gender history has continued.
If the traditional way of writing history was centered on ‘his story,’ it is now necessary to find and listen to ‘her story.’ The study and writing of women’s history is not an easy job because sources and evidences are scanty. It sometimes needs historical imagination to read between the lines. It would be a historian’s significant task to write a balanced history including both men and women.
