라투레트는 20세기의 가장 탁월한 교회사가 중 하나였다. 논저의 양적면에서는 150여권의 저서를 출간하여 누구의 추적도 불허했다. 예일 대학교에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 그는 미국에서 선교가 중시되던 시기에 태어나고 경건한 가정에서 자라 그 영향으로 중국선교사가 되었다. 건강 때문에 선교사역에서 물러나 고향에서 치료 후 그는 학문의 세계에 들어갔다. 그의 학문적인 관심도 선교역사였다. 선교적인 염두에서 중국 일본등지의 역사 연구서를 펴내고 사학과에서는 동양사 교수로 자리 잡았다. 종교학과에서도 기독교를 선교사적 관점에서 교수했다. 신학교에서는 기독교확장사를 가르쳤다. 기독교는 초대 교회로부터 지금까지 계속 확장되어 왔다는 견해였다. 그의 대표적인 저서는 『기독교확장사』 7권과 『혁명시대의 기독교』 5권은 그의 대표적 저서이다. 그 외에도 우리에게 많이 알려진 저서로 『기독교회사』와 『중국기독교선교사』 등이 있다. 이러한 저서들을 통해서 그는 기독교역사는 계속 확장되어 왔다는 것을 증거하였다. 백낙준과 라투레트는 예일 대학교에서 사제 관계였다. 라투레트가 백낙준의 박사논문 지도교수였다. 백낙준은 라투레트의 교회사 방법론을 따랐다. 교회의 역사는 선교의 역사라고고 그의 저서 『한국개신교사』에서 스스로 밝혔다. 라투레트 페이퍼가 예일 신학대학원에 수집되어 있음으로 이를 활용할 것과 백낙준의 글들도 더 수집하여야 할 것이다. 한걸음 더 나아간 연구를 위해서이다.

Kenneth Scott Latourette was one of the most famous Church Historian in the 20th century. Especially for the publication, he was the first one. He published about 150 volumes. In order to publish the books, he gave up marriage too.
His renowned published books are A History of the Expansion of Christianity 7Vols., Christianity in Revolutionary Ages: A History of Christianity in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries 5Vols., A History of Christianity and A History of Christian Missions in China etc.
He grew up Christian family. In the end of the 19th century there was strong influence of Moody’s revival movement and Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Mission in American Church History to young students. He was also influenced it and became a missionary in China after he got Ph. D. degree from Yale University. But because of his ill health condition, he returned to his home town. After recover from the ill health, he became a scholar focus on mission history. His methodology of Church History was Christian Church has been expanded from the beginning so far. He insisted on this theory through his many books and articles.
The relationship between K.S. Latourette and G. L Paik was professor and student at Yale Graduate School. Paik wrote his dissertation for Ph. D. on the History of Protestant Mission in Korea under the guidance of Prof. Latourette. Therefore when Paik published his dissertation at Union Christian College in Pengyang, he mentioned it.
In order to further study, we have to collect Latourette’s papers which is in Special Collection Room in Yale Divinity School Library and also Paik’s, too.
