근대 유럽에서 미국으로 넘어온 셰커 교도들은 그들의 종교적 신념을 지키며 정직하고 검소한 생활을 유지하였는데, 생활 에 필요한 제품들을 직접 제작해서 사용했다. 순수한 기능만을 추구하며 장식이 없는 기능을 위주로 제품을 생산 사용하였 다. 종교적인 내용을 제외하자면 합목적성에 초점을 맞춘 기능주의를 추구했다 할 수 있다. 기능주의는 제품이 가지고 있는 순수한 기능을 중심으로 생산과정과 사용편리성에 중심을 맞추어 디자인, 설계, 생산이 이루어진다. 산업혁명을 기점으로 본격적으로 발전을 거듭한 기능주의는 상업성과 합리주의를 표방하며 발전했으나, 그 바탕에는 인간을 생각하는 휴머니즘 과 공리주의가 영향을 주었다. 단순히 사용자의 편리함과 정신적 만족감만을 고려한 것이 아닌 생산자의 노동환경 역시 고 려되었다. 이러한 사상들의 바탕은 산업혁명을 시작으로 러시아 아방가르드, 데스틸, 독일공작연맹, 바우하우스, 브라운사 로 이어져 시대가 흐름에 따라 발전을 거듭하였다. 정치적, 경제적, 시대적 상황에 따라 기능주의가 사용된 의도, 목적, 시 도했던 각각의 요소들을 그들만의 방법으로 발전시키며 제품 본연의 합목적성에 맞도록 발전되었다. 또한 서로에게 영향을 주고받으며 각자의 기능주의 형식으로 발전되었다.

The Shakers, who came to America from modern Europe, maintained honest, frugal living while keeping their religious beliefs, and they used daily necessities for living by manufacturing them in person. They produced unadorned function-oriented products to use while pursuing pure function only. Thus, it can be said that they pursued functionalism with focus on purposiveness except religious contents. Functionalism is in pursuit of design, planning and production centered on the production process with the pure function of a product as the center, and easy usefulness. The functionalism, which continued its development in earnest with the Industrial Revolution as a starting point, developed while claiming to advocate commercialism and rationalism, but actually, humanism and utilitarianism, which think of a human, had an influence on the basis of functionalism. In short, functionalism also took a producer's labor environment into account other than simply considering user convenience and emotional satisfaction only. Starting from the Industrial Revolution, the basis of such ideas was linked to avant garde in Russia, De Still, Deutscher Werkbund, Bauhaus, and Braun to serve to repeat development as time flowed. Functionalism-based products developed to meet products' primal purposiveness as the relative design artists developed functionalism-applied intention & purpose, and functionalism-attempted respective elements in their own way according to political, economic, periodic circumstances. In addition, functionalism developed into the form of individual functionalism while exchanging influences with each other.
