이 논문은 현대 중국의 체제 전환에 대한 전망의 한 단서로서, 근대 일본에서 서구에서 말하는 liberty나 freedom를 번역한 ‘自由’라는 개념이 근대기 중국에 어 떻게 유입되어 현재까지 전개되어왔는가를 다루는데 목적이 있다. 다만, 그 전반적 인 내용을 한꺼번에 다 다루지 않고 근대기 번역어 ‘자유’ 개념의 성립과 그 중국 유입에 이르는 간략한 과정만을 우선 살피게 될 것이다. ‘자유’ 개념이 중국에 유 입되어 근대 지식인 사이에서 어떤 논의가 이뤄졌는가에 대한 구체적인 논의는 여 기서 다루지 않는다. 논문에서 논의된 내용은 첫째, 중국에서 ‘自由’ 개념 이해의 의의. 둘째, liberty, freedom, 동양 고전 속의 自由, 그리고 ‘自由’라는 飜譯語. 셋째, 중국 사상사적 맥락에서 본 ‘自由’ 및 自然개념. 넷째, 일본에서의 ‘自由’ 개념 번역 사정. 다섯 째, 번역어 ‘自由’의 중국 流入과 그 이후에 대한 전망이다.

This paper study on translations of liberty and freedom in modern Japan. I discussed about when and how the western two concepts, liberty and freedom, are translated to JIYU(自由) in japanese by intellects i.e. Nisiamane(西周. 1829-1897), Katohiroyuki(加藤弘之. 1836-1916), Hukuzawayukichi(福澤諭吉. 1834-1901) of modern japan. After that the JIYU is also, influenced on modern chinese intellects i.e. Yenfu(嚴復. 1854-1921)，Langchichao(梁啓超. 1873-1929), Kangyouwei (康有爲. 1858-1927), and modern korea intellects also accepted it. Of course, JIYU is originally from ancient china classics and poetries. Japanese translated liberty and freedom, based on ZIYUO(自由) in chinese, to JIYU, and so ZIYUO(自由) in chinese not same meaning with it. ZIYUO, in ancient china, is used negatively, before priests and Taoists of the medieval times reread it affirmatively. In this paper, I will focus on not chinese ZIYUO but modern japanese JIYU
