이 논문은 국제불교영화제 상영작의 유형과 특성에 대한 연구를 시도한 것이다. 국제불교영화제는 불교영화재단이 주관하는 국제적인 이벤트로서, 불교적 주제의 영화 또는 불교적 영감이 반영된 영화에 초점을 맞추는 불교 영화 전문 영화제이다. 필자는 유형론적 분석을 통해 몇 가지 양상을 발견하였다. 첫째, 문학작품 을 소재로 하는 불교영화나 윤회사상을 구현한 불교영화는 없었다는 점이 다. 둘째, 자주 발견되는 유형으로는 불교적 가르침의 의미를 추구한 작품, 불교 관련 인물의 전기 성격의 작품, 수행과 깨달음의 세계를 다룬 작품이 있었다. 셋째, 티베트불교 관련 작품이 다수를 점한다는 점이다. 외국의 불교영화, 특히 서구의 불교영화가 높은 수준의 성취를 이루었다 고 말하기는 어렵다. 불교문학의 영화화나 심도 깊은 해석과 날선 관점에 입 각한 윤회사상의 영화화가 이루어진다면 불교영화의 진전이 이루어질 것이 다. 서구에서의 불교의 영화화가 티베트불교에 집중되고 있는 사실에 대한 진지한 성찰도 필요하다. 서구에서 만들어진 다수의 불교영화가 티베트불교 를 다루고 있다는 사실은 서구인들의 불교 이해가 여전히 정치·사회적 양 상에 제한되어 있음을 보여준다.

This thesis tries to research on the types and characters of the movies screened in IBFF(International Buddhist Film Festival). IBFF is an international event supervised by BFF(Buddhist Film Foundation), a specialized Buddhist film festival taking focus on Buddhist-themed or Buddhistinspired films. I found some aspects through a typing research as follows. First, there is no films which filmized literary writings or embodied sam. sa-ra, the concept of reincarnation in IBFF. Second, the order of frequency of entry is as follows. (1. the films seeking to the meaning of Buddhist teachings. 2. the films to include biography of the individuals related to Buddhism. 3. the films to describe the Buddhist world of asceticism and enlightenment.) Third, the films involved with Tibet Buddhism hold a majority. Therefore, it is difficult to say that the Buddhist films from foreign countries, especially from the West have attained high standard. The cinematization of Buddhist literature or the idea of reincarnation with in-depth interpretation and sharp analysis can make this slow haul more speedy. It is desirable to introspect seriously about the fact that ‘the cinematization of Buddhism’in the West is converged upon Tibet Buddhism. The fact that many of the Buddhist films made in the West are dealing with Tibet shows that the Westerner’s understanding of Buddhism is still confined to the political and social aspects.
