본 논문은 고려 수월관음도에 관한 기존의 연구들을 근저로 고려 중·후기 불교계의 특징, 수월관음에 관한 문헌적 전거, 거사불교(居 士佛敎)와 수월관음의 접점을 찾았다. 수월관음도가 고려 중·후기 라는 비교적 짧은 시기에 제작된 것에 비해 현대인들에게 미치는 파 급력은 엄청나다. 이 불화가 갖고 있는 대단한 영향력과 달리 그동안 고려 수월관음도 연구는 몇 가지 근원적인 문제점을 안고 있었다. 명 칭의 전거에 관한 문제, 특정 지물에 관한 문제 등이 바로 그것이다. 본 논고에서 이들 중『불설고왕관세음경(佛說高王觀世音經)』의 전거 문제, 대나무의 등장시기에 대한 문제제기 등을 통해 수월관음도의 도상적 이해의 폭을 넓히고자 했다. 특히 수월관음도를 구성하는 개개의 요소들 중 대나무에 관한 도상 학적 해석이 미비한 현 상황에서 간단하게나마 대나무에 관한 새로 운 불교미학적 해석을 시도했다. 대나무는 선승과 거사들이 절개, 은 일, 청정의 의미로 즐겨 사용한 소재이다. 청정(淸淨)은『금강경』에서 분별을 일으키지 않는 것을 말하며 이는『반야심경』에서 말하는 공 (空)사상으로도 연결된다. 대나무는 어떻게 청정, 공(空)의 미학을 상 징적으로 보여주고 있으며, 수월관음도 속에서 어떻게 표현되었는지 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 수월관음과 불교신앙에 관해 관음신앙을 중 심으로 진행된 기존의 연구에서 벗어나 선종과의 연결고리와 새로운 해석을 제시했다.

This study based on the earlier studies about Goryeo Water- Moon Avalokites´vara Bodhisattva found out an agreement about features of Buddism in the mid to late Goryeo dynasty, literature reference on Water-Moon Avalokite´svara Bodhisattva, grhapati Buddism and Water-Moon Avalokite´svara Bodhisattva. Although Water-Moon Avalokites´vara Bodhisattva Paintings were made during a relatively short period, they had had the great power on the people. This Buddhist Painting had great influence however studies on Water-Moon Avalokites´vara Bodhisattva Paintings had some primary disagreement such as name and specific features. This study tried to broaden their iconic understanding of Water-Moon Avalokite´svara Bodhisattva by raising problems of reference about『 Avalokite´svara Su-tra of King Gao(佛說高王 觀世音經)』and the period of appearing bamboo icon. At this point, interpretations of bamboo icon are incomplete among the elements which constitute Water-Moon Avalokite´s vara Bodhisattva Paintings. So this study tries to briefly seek out new interpretations on bamboo icon. The grhapati and Zenist has used bamboo as a symbol for Fidelity, Seclusion and Purification. Purification means does not raise classification in the 『Diamon stura』. It also relates to Sunyata in the 『Heart Su-tra(般若心經)』. Furthermore, this study examined that bamboo icon shows how symbolizes the aesthetics of Purifiaction and Sunyata and how these aesthetics are expressed in Water- Moon Avalokite´svara Bodhisattva Paintings. Finally, It suggests new interpretations on Water-Moon Avalokites´vara Bodhisattva and Buddhistic beliefs relating to the Zen by deviating form the earlier studies that based on Avalokitesvara belief/faith.
