본 논문은 불교에서 영성의 의미와 더불어 불교의 영성개발에 관한 연구들을 고찰하고, 사회복지와 영성, 불교사회복지실천의 영성적 접근에 관해 논의하였는데, 영성이라는 말은 기독교적인 전통에서 나온 것으로 알고 있지만 불교 경전에서도 영성이란 용어를 사용하 고 있으며 전 세계의 다양한 종교적 전통을 포괄하는 보편적인 용어 라고 할 수 있다. 불교사회복지실천의 영성적 접근을 위해 불교경전에서 영성의 사 례와 의미를 밝히고, 불교의 영성개발에 관한 연구를 통해 연구동향 과 실천 프로그램들을 고찰하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 불교사회복지실 천에서 영성적 접근의 필요성을 제기하였다. 연구방법은 영성과 사 회복지와 관련해서 불교경전을 비롯하여 논문과 단행본들을 참고로 하는 문헌학적인 연구를 하였다. 불교에서 영성의 의미를 밝히기 위해 영성의 불교적 관점과 더불 어, 불교 영성의 경전적 근거를 살펴보았는데, 영성(靈性)이란 용어 를 131개의 경전에서 찾을 수 있었으며, 불교 경전에서는 영성이 불 성(佛性)과 같은 의미로 쓰이는 경우가 많았다. 물론 불교에서의 영 성은 기독교에서의 영성의 개념과 차이가 있는데, 기독교에서는 영 성을 실체화된 개념으로 사용하고 있기 때문에 불교에서의 영성의 의미와는 다른 것이 사실이다. 불교에서 영성의 의미를 알고 개념을 정립할 필요가 있기 때문에 영성에 대한 경전적 근거를 밝히고자 하였다. 또한 사회복지와 영성 에 관해 고찰해 보았으며, 불교사회복지의 실천을 위한 영성적 접근 에 대해 논의해 보았다. 현재 사회복지학계에서도 영성에 관한 논의 나 연구는 시작단계이고, 불교사회복지에서도 영성에 관한 연구나 실천은 제대로 논의되고 있지 않은 실정이다. 불교사회복지에서 영성(불성)을 복지대상자의 강점과 영적 자원으 로 활용할 수 있도록 하기 위해서, 불교적 관점에서 영성의 개념화, 영성측정도구의 개발, 사회복지교육에서 영성과정의 개설, 사회복지 실천방법에서 영성의 개발, 불교사회복지시설에 종사하는 사회복지 사의 영성훈련, 불교사회복지시설과 지역사회 및 글로벌 영성의 연 대방안에 대한 필요성을 강조함으로써 불교사회복지실천에 있어서 영성적 접근의 필요성을 제기하고자 하였다. 이와 같이 불교사회복지에서 영성적 접근은 새로운 시도로서 일반 사회복지와는 다른 불교사회복지의 정체성과 전문성을 확보하고 불 교의 영적 자원을 개발하는 계기가 될 것이다. 또한 사회복지실천 영 역에서 영성적 접근을 시도함으로써 인간에 대한 전인적인 접근을 통해 진정한 사회복지를 실현하고 복지사회의 지평을 확대하여 사회 복지의 새로운 패러다임을 가져올 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

The purpose of this study is to find the meaning and practicing of the spirituality in the Buddhist social welfare. For this purpose, this study defined the general meaning of spirituality and tried to suggest the necessity of spirituality for the Buddhist social welfare. In addition, this study researched on the concept of spirituality in the Buddhist social welfare activities and suggested the roles of spirituality for those fields. This study investigated the Buddhist Scriptures, social work of publications and documents that was related to the study of spirituality. This study found one hundred thirtyone concepts of the spirituality in the Buddhist Scriptures. The meanings of spirituality in the Buddhist Scriptures were presented as like the Buddha-Nature. Also, this study conducted to find the conceptions and characteristics of spirituality, principles and practices of spirituality in Buddhist social welfare. and then put an emphasis on the correlation between social welfare and spirituality. The Buddhist social welfare is different from general social welfare from the spiritual meaning point of the view. The results of this study suggest that the practices, identities and professionalisms of spirituality are urgently needed for Buddhist social welfare. Therefore, this study shows that the realization of social welfare through spirituality is for us to live in the social community and the social welfare in Buddhism have to be the welfare based on the spirituality like a Buddha-Nature. The significance of this research is that it considers a concept of spirituality for the holistic-person understanding of human beings.
