中國繪畫의 역사를 살펴보면, 山水畵가 등장하여 中國 繪畫史에서 중심적인 지위를 차지하게 된 이후에야 비로소 筆墨의 예술적 경지 그리고 창작동기와 이론 등 화가와 관련된 것들 역시 상당히 높은 수 준에 이르게 되었다는 것을 알 수 있다. 宋代는 중국 산수화 역사상 황금기로, 유명 화가의 그림이 많을 뿐만 아니라 수준도 높아 고금의 일류라고 할 수 있다. 특히 형식과 기법은 중국 산수화 전통발전에 매우 특수한 공헌을 하였다고 할 수 있다. 北宋시기 范寬이 그린 <溪山行旅圖>는 중국 산수화의 최고봉일 뿐만 아니라 외국인들이 중국 산수화를 이해할 때 반드시 언급하지 않을 수 없는 작품이다. 이 그림을 본 사람들은 거의 전부 ‘한번 보고 나면 잊기 어려울(一見難忘)’ 정도이며, 많은 감상자들은 호기심을 갖 고 또 많은 감상자들이 감동을 받는다. 그렇다면 이 한 폭의 그림은 감상자들에게 왜 이렇게 감동과 호감을 주는 큰 힘이 존재하는 것일 까? 본고에서는 北宋 范寬의 <溪山行旅圖>를 분석의 대상으로 삼아 그의 筆墨과 意境에 대한 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 방법은 먼저 <계 산행려도>의 필묵을 構圖 ‧ 筆法으로 나누어 분석하고, 다음으로 예 술적 경지의 의경을 분석을 고찰하였다. 그 결과 필묵의 경지인 雨點 皴과 화면분할보다 더 중요한 것은 이 그림이 보는 감상자들에게 道 의 세계로 회귀해야 한다는 의경을 통해 잊혀 존재를 일깨운다는 점 이다.

After landscape painting emerged and occupied a key position in Chinese painting tradition, ink wash painting became highly developed and came up to a considerably high standard with its artistic idioms, motivation of creation, theories, and factors pertaining to artists. The Song period was a golden age in Chinese landscape painting. Many quality paintings were produced by many famous painters during this period. In terms of form and technique, painters of this era made very special contributions to the development of the Chinese landscape painting tradition. Travelers Amid Mountains and Streams (溪山行旅圖) produced by Fan Kuan during the Northern Song period is the most prominent work of Chinese landscape painting and also inevitably talked of when non-Chinese people including Westerners try to comprehend Chinese landscape painting. Almost all viewers of this painting are deeply touched by it so they could never forget this. Many viewers show curiosity and others are touched. What great strength does this painting have to touch viewers and make a favorable impression? This thesis is a study on Fan Kuan’s brushwork and ink, and mental landscape (uigyeong, 意境) through an analysis of his Travelers Amid Mountains and Streams. As the method of this study this painting’s composition and painting style is analyzed and the mental landscape this work arouses is investigated. What’s more important than ujeomjun (small oval-shaped and raindrop-like texture brush strokes) and split composition is this painting awakens some forgotten being through mental landscape stressing a return to truth-seeking.
