이 글은 미국에 거주하는 한인 결혼이주여성과 그 자녀의 언어 사용 양상 및 정체성 형성 과정을 탐색하려는 목적을 가지고 있다. 이를 위해 2011년부터 2014년까지 이루어진 질적 사례 연구를 통해, 연구 참여자들의 사용 언어(한국어, 영어)에 대한 인식, 시간의 흐 름에 따른 인식의 변화, 그 과정에서 형성되고 변화된 정체성의 양상에 관심을 두고 연구 를 수행하였다. 연구 결과, 언어와 정체성 간에는 긴밀하고도 유기적인 관계가 있음이 확인 되었으며, 이는 연구 참여자들의 사례를 통해 보다 구체적으로 드러났다. 또한 언어 사용과 정체성 형성은 유동적이고 가변적이어서, 시간과 환경에 따라 복잡한 양상으로 변화한다는 사실이 확인되었다. 마지막으로 언어 사용과 정체성 형성에 있어 결혼이주여성과 자녀는 상호 간 중요한 위치에 있었으나, 이들의 언어 사용-정체성 형성은 동일한 양상으로 전개되 지 않음이 발견되었다. 이상의 연구 결과를 토대로, 이 글은 한국 다문화교육을 위한 시사 점을 제시하였다.

This study aims to explore language uses and identity construction of a marital immigrant woman and her child. To achieve this purpose, the present qualitative case study focused on the participants' perception of the language that they use, Korean and English, the changes of their awareness on language according to the flow of time, and aspects of identity construction during this process. The findings demonstrated a close relationship between language uses and identity construction, and this relationship is materialized in the participants' case. The study also confirmed that language use and identity construction were fluid and dynamic; thus, they have been changed in accordance with time and circumstances. Finally, it was notable that an immigrant mother and her child were crucial to each other in using languages and constructing identities, but their language uses and identity construction were not developed in the same way. Based on these findings, this study provides implications for multicultural education in South Korea.
