해방 후, 한글 서예라는 이름으로 붓글씨 교육이 공식화되고, 한글 가 로쓰기의 보급과 함께 서예가들은 가로쓰기, 붓글씨 교육을 위한 연구를 시작했다. 전통적인 세로쓰기 규범 대신, 다양한 서예 글씨본과 교과서 에 서양의 가로쓰기처럼 가로 기준선을 의식해서 쓰여 진 자형이 나타났 다. 여기에 맞추어 초성에서 중성으로 이동할 때 붓의 움직임과 선의 방 향, 자모 위치와 결합 등이 가로쓰기 운영을 위한 가로 기준선에 맞도록 자형의 변화가 이루어졌다. 1950년대부터 문교부 정규과목으로 한글 서예 교육이 초등학교 기본 교육으로 실시되어 왔다. 가로쓰기의 교육의 일환으로 다양한 서예교과 서가 가로쓰기 글씨 표본을 제시하였다. 1959년 문교부가 발행한 『초등 글씨본』에는 현대 가로쓰기 디지털 본문용 서체 설계에 참고가 되는 기 본 요소들이 무척 많다. 세로쓰기 전통으로 형성되어 온 정자 궁체를 가 로쓰기로 할 때는 어떻게 반영해야 하는가하는 기본적인 내용이 제시되 어 있기 때문이다. 이 연구에서는 한글 궁체의 규범과 미적 원리를 계승한 디지털 본문체 개발을 위한 고찰을 해본다. 특히 ‘초등학교 글씨본 교과서’에 소개되어 있는 궁체의 붓글씨들을 살펴보면서, 한글 낱글자가 이루어지는 규칙과 가로쓰기로 쓰인 자형의 특징, 그리고 가로쓰기로 바뀌면서 어떤 방식으 로 자형을 조정했는지 분석을 통해서 검토한다. 그래서 이 논문에서는 1950년대 문교부가 발행한 대표 붓글씨 교과서를 선정하여 실증적 증거 자료를 통해서 증명하고, 바람직한 현대 가로쓰기와 가로조합 디지털 한 글 본문체 개발의 방향성을 제시하였다.
Seal engraving has been through many changes and development in sync with history of mankind. The object of expression changed from pattern imprinted in early New Stone Age to iconograph · design · letter, and its usage also changed from utility and token of belief to enjoyment and incantation. Therefore, It was considered as object of expressing Totemism and Shamanism at that time. These changes of usage are closely related to awareness of that time and folk rituals, so it eventually developed into ornamental purposes as wealth · long life · Beoksa · Ap-seung. Especially, the meaning of prayer was strengthened through Iconographic seal, so Taoists of the period of Wei, Qin, North and South Dynasties wore seal engraved <Hwang-sin-wol-jang> when they went mountains for praying to drive away beasts and evil spirits. And this custom raised artistic value of Iconographic seal so it developed into sealing in Won Dynasty and after Ming and Qing Dynasty it systemized into independent art. In other words, there were many changes in usage in the process of establishing independent art system from simple utility. And I found the meaning of Seal engraving and symbolism through form and content of Seal engraving emerged from these process. Therefore, In this paper, I tried to raise the value of Seal engraving as historical legacy developed and changed with history of mankind not just as simple practical, artistic product.
