본 논문은 샬럿 마리아 터커 (“A. L. O. E.”)의 복음주의 아동 소설『한 영국 가정에서의 성 베드로의 모습』(1887)을 여성적 관점의 성경 주해로 읽는다. 더 나아가, 이 소설은 여성의 전통적 성경 해석 모드였던 스토리텔링, 의역, 혹은 묵상적 주해의 범주를 뛰어넘어 신교적 신앙의 옹호를 위한 비판적 해석에 참여하고, 만인사제설을 여성과 아이들에게까지 확대 적용시킨다. 이에 이 논문은 소설에 나타난 터커의 성서적 해석을 밝히기 위해 터커가 성경과 소통하는 수사학적, 주해적, 문학적 방법론을 살핀다. 그럼으로써 본 논문은 공식적 성직에서 배제되었던 19세기 여성들이 어떻게 문학을 통해 종교적 주체성을 확립하는지 보여줄 것이다.

This article argues that Charlotte Maria Tucker’s children’s novel Pictures of St. Peter in an English Home (1887) is a work of female biblical exegesis that seeks to exceed women’s traditional hermeneutic modes and enter into critical interpretation championing Evangelical beliefs, such as the priesthood of all believers, including women and children. To this end, the rhetorical, interpretative and literary methods used to engage with the Bible are explored to uncover her scriptural interpretations as embedded in the novel. As such, this essay widens our understanding of how nineteenth-century women used literature to assert religious agency despite their exclusion from official ministry.
