이 논문은 한국 불교음악 연구의 현황을 살펴보고 앞으로 과제를 정리하는 데 목적을 두었다. 그동안 많은 연구가 있었고 그에 대한 연구사 정리도 여러 차례 있었기 때문에 그것을 바탕으로 통계적 정리와 큰 흐름을 정리하여 앞으로의 연구 방향을 찾아보려 하였다. 논의 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 불교음악 연구의 추이는 문화재 지정과 같은 외부적 요구와 깊은 관련이 있다. 연구자의 수도 적고 그들의 연구 성향은 다양하지 않다. 더 다양한 연구가 시도되어야 할 것이다.
둘째, 연구 주제의 설정에 있어서도 평면적인 경향, 특정 주제에 집중되는 경향이 강했고, 깊이 없이 개관에 그치는 연구, 쉽게 진행할 수 있는 연구에 집중하는 경향들도 상당수 확인되었다. 다양한 주제로의 확장, 복합적이고 종합적인 연구 주제 설정이 필요하다.
셋째, 연구 재료의 한계와 방법의 획일화 문제를 다루었다. 불교음악, 특히 범패 전승의 특성으로 인해 구전음악의 보편성을 확보하기 어려운 문제가 가장 넘기 어려운 점이라 보았다.
무엇보다 현재 불교음악 연구에 필요한 것은 특별한 ‘결론’이 아니라 논문작성을 위한 자료집의 축적이다. 음원 자료의 축적과 악보 자료의 구축이 시간별로 가창자별로 중복적으로 누적되어야만 한다. 학자들이 자유롭게 가설을 세우고 그것을 증명할 수 있도록 말이다. 매우 적은 수의 학자들의 고군분투에 박수를 보내며 이들의 노력을 발판삼아 한 발 더 나아가기를 기대한다.

The purpose of this paper is to review the present state of Korean Buddhist music research and to sort out future works. The results of the discussion are summarized as follows.
First, the trend of Buddhist music research is deeply related to the external demands such as cultural property designation. The number of researchers is small and their research propensity does not vary. More research should be attempted.
Secondly, there are many tendencies to concentrate on a planar tendency, a specific topic, a research that stops in depth, and a tendency to concentrate on research that can be carried out easily. Extension to various topics, complex and comprehensive research topics are needed.
Third, we deal with the limitations of research materials and uniformity of methods. The problem of difficulty in securing the universality of oral music due to the characteristics of Buddhist music, especially the clapper tradition, was the most difficult thing.
Above all, what is needed for studying Buddhist music today is accumulation of sound source materials and construction of score data. Based on the data, scholars should freely establish a hypothesis and prove it.
