지난 20년 동안 수많은 정서지능(EI) 연구가 다양한 학문분야에서 시행되었다. 최근 스포츠심리학 분야에서도 EI 연구의 관심은 증가되고 있다. 그러나 대부분의 스포츠 EI 연구자들은 조직이나 교육상황에서 개발된 EI 모형과 측정을 사용하고 있다. 따라서 스포츠 EI에 대한 이론적 모형과 측정개발이 스포츠심리학 분야에 시급히 요구된다. 본 연구의 목적은 스포츠 정서지능(EI)의 개념적 모형을 가설적으로 설정하고, 스포츠 상황에서 문화적으로 적합하고 심리측정적으로 타당한 EI 측정을 탐색하는데 있었다. 구체적으로, 본 연구는 5개의 EI 주제에 대해 관심의 초점을 두고 논의를 전개했다: 1) 정서지능의 이론적 배경과 개념(모형), 2) 정서지능 측정의 내용과 방법, 3) 스포츠 EI 연구 고찰, 4) 스포츠 EI의 가설적 모형, 5) 스포츠 정서지능 측정 탐색. 전반적으로, 대부분의 EI 선행 연구들은 혼합 또는 능력 모형의 틀에서 EI의 구조를 설명하고 측정도구를 개발하고 있다. EI의 이론적 개념들을 토대로 다차원-위계적 스포츠 EI 모형이 제안되었다. 이 가설적 모형은 귀납적 방법을 통해 검증될 수 있으며, 스포츠 EI 측정개발의 기틀이 될 수 있다. 마지막으로, 본 연구는 문화적 편중성을 최소화시키는 스포츠 EI 측정의 내용 및 방법을 고찰하고, 효과적인 내적/외적 구인타당화 검증을 위한 심리측정적 방법을 제시했다.

Sport psychology researchers have become increasingly recognized that emotional intelligence(EI) may be an important construct in the sport domain. However, most researchers have used EI model and measurement which have been developed in organizational and educational settings. It is strongly needed to develop the sport-specific theoretical model and measurement, and empirical research to inform practice. The purpose of this study was to hypothetically establish and inductively test the sport EI model, and to explore cultural bias of EI for developing psychometrically sound measurement in sport contexts. More specifically, this study focused on the five subjects to discuss the EI model and measurement in sport: 1) theoretical background and concept of EI, 2) content and method of EI measurement, 3) EI research in sport, 4) development of the hypothesized model of sport EI, 5) development of sport EI measurement. Overall, most of the research in the area of EI were conceptualized EI in developing measurement tools by adopting either the mixed or the ability model. A multivariate-hierarchical EI model was proposed to understand EI in sport. This hypothesized model may be inductively tested to use for developing EI measurement in sport. Finally, this study discussed the EI assessment methods and the ways to minimize cultural bias in developing EI items in sport, and suggested some psychometrical procedures to effectively examine the construct validity of sport EI measurement.
