이승만은 태평양전쟁이 발발하자 본격적으로 임시정부 승인외교를 펼쳤다. 이런 과정에서 많은 미국 기독교인이 그를 도왔고, 그 중에 주목할 만한 사람이 바로 임시정부와 미국의 언론인들을 잘 알고 있는 여자 선교사 제랄딘 피치(Geraldine T. Fitch)였다. 이승만과 제랄딘 피치는 미국이 한국을 승인하고, 무기를 대여해주어 한국의 독립을 돕는 것이 태평양전쟁에서 이길 수 있는 길이라고 주장하였다.
제랄딘 피치는 다음 몇 가지 점에서 이승만과 한국의 독립운동을 도왔다. 첫째, 제랄딘 피치는 자신의 중국과 미국의 인맥을 통하여 한국의 독립운동을 도왔다. 특별히 그는 장제스의 부인 쑹에이링을 통하여 임정 승인운동을 도왔다. 둘째, 제랄딘은 이승만의 주요 조직인 한미협회와 기독교 인친한회에 다같이 참여하여 적극적으로 활동하였다. 뿐만이 아니라 이승만과 입장을 달리하는 사람들과도 좋은 관계를 유지하면서 단합된 독립운동을 이루려고 노력하였다. 셋째, 제랄딘은 한국의 독립운동과 임시정부 승인운동을 미국언론에 널리 알리고, 자신이 직접 TIMES을 비롯한 유수한 언론에 직접 기고함으로서 이승만과 독립운동을 도왔다. 넷째, 제랄딘은 이승만을 지지하여 미국의 독립운동이 이승만을 중심으로 단합할 것을 호소하였다. 그는 김구와도 깊은 관계를 가지고 있었지만 이승만이 한국의 독립운동의 상징적인 인물이며, 앞으로도 이승만이 대한민국을 이끌고 나 갈 사람이라고 보았다. 접

When the Pacific War broke out, Rhee Syngman aggressively engaged in international diplomacy on behalf of the provisional government. In the process, many American Christians came to his support; notable among them was Geraldine T. Fitch, a female missionary who knew the provisional government’s situation and was well-connected to American journalists. Syngman Rhee and Geraldine Fitch argued America’s approval of provisional government and provision of arms through the Lend Lease Policy would help Korea's independence and would win the Allies the Pacific War.
Geraldine Fitch helped Rhee and Korean independence movements in several ways. First, Geraldine helped Korea's independence movement through her Chinese and American contacts. In particular, she leveraged her connection with Chiang Kai-shek’s wife Soong Mei Ring to support the movement to recognize the provisional government. Second, Geraldine actively participated in the Korean American Council and the Christian Friends of Korea which are Rhee’s main organizations. To achieve a unified independence movement, she made efforts to retain good relationships with people who held different positions than Rhee’s. Third, Geraldine supported Rhee by publicizing the Korean Independence Movement and the need to recognize the provisional government to the American press. She directly published articles in leading media outlets, including the New York Times. Fourth, Geraldine supported Rhee by insisting that the independent movement should organize around Rhee. Though Geraldine had a deep relationship with Kim Ku, she viewed Rhee as the central figure to lead the independence movement.
