詞의 風格은 蘇軾에 와서 일변한다. 晩唐이래로 이어져 오던 婉約한 사풍이 소식에 와서 豪放하고 淸新한 풍격으로 바뀐다. 이렇게 사풍이 변하게 된 뒤에는 소식의 정치적 처지와 밀접한 관련이 있다. 자신이 쓴 詩가 문제가 되어 ‘烏臺詩案’이란 筆禍를 겪게 된 소식은 시를 대신하여 詞를 통해 자신의 감정을 토로했다. ‘시를 쓰듯 사를 쓴다(以詩爲詞)’는 평가는 여기에서 나왔다. 소식은 당시 文人士大夫들의 관심의 대상이 아닌 사를 통해 貶謫으로 인한 복잡한 감회를 사를 통해 거침없이 쏟아내었다. 폄적으로 인한 여러 가지 복잡한 자신의 심경을 豪放하고, 淸麗하고, 超脫한 풍격의 사로 노래했다. 결과적으로 소식의 폄적은 전통의 婉約한 풍격의 사와는 다른 새로운 풍격의 사를 탄생시켰고 이는 다시 당시 문단에 영향을 주어 송대 詞風의 변화를 이끌었다.

The style of prose goes through a major change in the age of Su Shi. The tender style of prose that was maintained since the latter years of the Tang Dynasty transformed into a vigorous and fresh style. The reason to this is related to Su Shi's political situation. Being a political victim of the Crow Terrace Poetry Case, he continued to express his emotions through prose instead of poem. This incident became the origin of evaluating prose “as if writing poem”. The literary noblemen were not so much interested in prose at his time, so Su Shi chose prose to illustrate complicated inner thoughts related to his political exile. His style was vigorous, clear, and transcendent. In conclusion, Su Shi's exile triggered him to develop a different prose style deviating from the traditional frail style, and this trend influenced the literary circles that created variation in the prose style of the Song age.
