이 논문은 제임스 조이스의 가슴 아픈 사건을 스테이시 앨러이모의 “횡단 신체성”을 통해 생태 비평적으로 분석해 나가고자 한다. 조이스가 『더블린 사람들』에서 더블린의 정체성으로 간주한 “마비”는 본래 신체에 사용되는 용어이며, 더블린의 물리적 환경과 불가분의 관계를 맺고 있다. 따라서 먼저 “마비의 중심지”로서 더블린의 정체성을 역사적, 사회적, 도시 환경적 관점에서 논의한다. 이어서 가슴 아픈 사건의 주 인공 제임스 더피 씨와 비인간 환경과의 상호 관련성을 탐구하고자 한다.

This paper takes an ecocritical approach to James Joyce’s “A Painful Case” through the lens of Stacy Alaimo’s “trans-corporeality” theory. Paralysis, which Joyce regards as Dublin’s identity in Dubliners, is a term often used for human bodies, and the term forms an inextricable relationship with Dublin’s urban environment. Therefore, this paper discusses Dublin’s identity as the center of paralysis through historical, social, and urban environmental perspectives. Then, the paper explores the interrelationship between the protagonist of “A Painful Case”, James Duffy, and nonhuman nature appearing in the short story.
