황무지에 등장하는 타로카드에 대한 연구와, 신비주의에 기반해 황무 지를 이해하려는 노력은 1950년대부터 국제적으로 꾸준히 행해져 왔다. 타 로카드는 한국에 21세기에 들어서 신비주의적 성격보다는 오락적 성격의 대중문화로 자리 잡아가고 있다. 이러한 문화적 변화에 발맞춰 본 연구는 기존 국내외에서 수행된 황무지 속 타로카드 연구를 토대로 타로점술이 직접 등장하는 43-59행을 보다 면밀하게 분석하고 해석해 우리말로도 새롭 게 번역해 보고자 했다. 기존 해석들을 존중하되, 작품 전체 해석의 일관성 을 해치거나 타로카드의 지식과 배치되는 분석에는 문제를 제기하여 미흡 한 부분은 보강하고 잘못된 점은 수정하였다. 엘리엇이 황무지를 집필할 당시 영국에 퍼져 있던 타로카드 문화와 지식을 토대로 텍스트를 해석하고 자 하였고, 이렇게 해석된 텍스트 내용은 현대 한국어 독자들을 위해 오늘 날 대중적으로 통용되는 한국어 타로카드 용어로 다시 옮기고자 하였다. 이 러한 노력은 기존 황무지 해석에 더 다양한 관점을 보태어 학계를 더 열 리고 풍성한 공간으로 만들 뿐만 아니라, 대중 독자들이 멀고 어렵게만 생 각하는 문학 ‘고전’을 보다 친숙하게 느끼고 흥미롭게 즐길 수 있는 대상으 로 전환시켜 줄 것이라 기대한다.

Studies on the tarot cards appearing in The Waste Land and the effort to understand The Waste Land based on occultism have been steadily carried out globally since the 1950s. In 21st-century Korea, tarot card reading is being established more as a popular culture of entertainment than a venture into occultism. In line with these cultural changes, this study intends to analyze and interpret lines 43-59 of The Waste Land, where tarot fortune-telling appears directly and more closely, based on the tarot card research in The Waste Land conducted in Korea and abroad. This study acknowledges the existing interpretations and analyses while also trying to point out the problems and limitations in them that make them inconsistent or contradict the knowledge of the tarot card. As it is believed that more advanced research on the tarot cards in The Waste Land should reflect in the new Korean translation for modern Korean readers, this study proposes a new translation using today’s popular Korean tarot card terms. These efforts will not only add more diverse perspectives to the existing interpretation of The Waste Land but also convert contemporary readers’ attitudes toward the literary “classic,” which they consider distant and difficult, into a piece of writing that can be read and enjoyed in a more familiar and interesting way.
