본 논문은 이디스 워튼의 버너 자매 에 나타난 형이상학적 욕망에 대한 고 찰이다. 워튼은 몇몇 소설작품들에서 주로 여성 인물들이 결혼의 환상을 통해 19세기말에서 20세기 초 미국의 사회적 분위기를 엿볼 수 있게 한다. 본 논문에 서 다루는 버너 자매 는 그녀의 첫 소설작품이면서 신흥부자들의 등장이 한창 이던 19세기 후반 뉴욕의 비주류들의 모습을 보여준다. 에블리나의 결혼에 대 한 환상은 가부장적인 남편 래미의 폭력과 약물중독으로 좌절되고, 결국 아이를 잃고 병들어 세상을 떠난다. 무엇보다도 그녀의 가톨릭으로의 개종은 앤 엘리자 에게 변절로 간주되고 에블리나가 언니 앤 엘리자 품 안에서 죽어가는 이방인 으로 남는다. 에블리나는 자신의 개종은 태어난지 하루 만에 세상을 떠난 아이 와 천국에서 재회의 가능성을 보여주고 있음에 다행이라고 생각한다. 즉 그녀에 게 있어서 아이는 신에게로 다가갈 수 있는 형이상학적 욕망의 매개역할을 하 면서, 또한 그것은 엘리자에게 충격적이고 그들 사이의 간극이다. 하지만, 자매 에게 공통적인 점은 사랑이다. 이로써, 본 작품에 나타난 다양한 관점의 형이상 학적 관점이 재조명된다.

This paper examines the metaphysical desire of Edith Wharton’s “Bunner Sisters”. In some novels, Edith Wharton allows the female characters to get a glimpse of the social atmosphere of the United States in the late 19th to early 20th centuries through the illusion of marriage. Her “Bunner Sisters” novel depicts the appearance of the mainstream of New York in the late 19th century when emerging rich people were in full swing. Evelina’s fantasy of marriage is frustrated by patriarchal husband Ramy’s violence and drug addiction, and she eventually dies of illness after losing their child. Above all, her conversion to Catholicism is considered a change by her sister, Anne Eliza. Evelina remains a dying stranger in her sister Anne Eliza’s arms. Evelina feels fortunate that her conversion shows the possibility of reuniting in heaven with a child who passed away a day after birth. In other words, for her, the child acts as a mediator for the metaphysical desire to reach God, but is shocking to Aliza and highlights the gap between them. However, love is universal. As a result, the metaphysical perspectives of various perspectives shown in this work are re-examined.
