본 연구는 아일랜드 문예부흥을 이끈 W.B. 예이츠와 올리비아 셰익스피어의 관계 고찰을 통해, 그것이 서로에게 끼친 영향을 규명하고자 한다. 두 사람은 1894년 처음 친구로 사귄 이래로 서로의 작품을 최초로 읽어주는 독자가 된 후 40여 년간 친구에서 연인, 다시 친구로서 밀접한 관계를 맺었다. 먼저 예이츠 시에 언급된 올리비아 셰익스피어를 통해서 그들의 관계를 추적할 것이다. 아울러 작가로서의 교유는 예이츠가 추구했던 신비학이 올리비아 셰익스피어의 󰡔아름다움이 머문 순간󰡕에 어떻게 구체적으로 나타나 있는지를 밝히고자 한다. 결과적으로 본 논문은 두 사람 간의 절친한 친구, 연인, 작가로서의 그들의 관계를 상호 중첩된 관계의 시학이라 명명한다.

By examining the relationship between W.B. Yeats and Olivia Shakespear, this study aims to investigate the effect they have exerted on each other. Since the two first met as friends in 1894, they became the first readers to read each other’s works. They have formed a close relationship from friends to lovers and then friends again for over 40 years. First, this paper will find their relationship with Olivia Shakespear mentioned in W.B. Yeats’s poems. Then, the study tries to identify what kind of influence Yeats had on Olivia Shakespear’s Beauty’s Hour as a writer. In particular, the research will investigate how concrete the occult appeared in her novel. As a result, this study will name their relationship the mutual relational poetics between W.B. Yeats and Olivia Shakespear as friends, lovers, and writers.
