풍수는 인간과 환경의 조화에 기반을 둔 동양 전통의 도시 입지이론이다. 최근 들어 지속 가능한 도시와 관련하여 풍수를 활용하는 방안이 지속해서 연구되고 있고, 이러한 연구 움직임은 동양뿐만 아니라 서양에서도 관찰된 다. 이들 연구 중에 풍수의 주관성을 최대한 배제하고 객관성을 확보하려는 시도가 두드러진다. 본 논문에서는 기존 연구에서 발표된 풍수 지표를 활용 하여 세계 최초의 전원도시인 영국의 레치워스와 영국의 마지막 신도시인 밀턴 케인즈를 평가함으로써 풍수의 범용성을 검증하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 풍수가 기술이 아니라 인간과 자연의 공생관계를 다루는 철학이라는 점에서 출발함으로써 풍수의 기본 원칙이 동양에만 국한되는 것이 아니라 동서양 모두 적용될 수 있음을 보여주었다.

Traditional Fengshui played an important role to decide capital cities of Koryo and Chosun dynasties. Nonetheless, Fengshui has not been actively used in contemporary urban planning these days. Thus, studies on how to utilise Fengshui for urban planning are ongoing, and there have been some progress in this field, including development of Fengshui indicators and application of these indicators to new towns in Korea. However, there have not been many studies on how Fengshui can be used in the urban planning of Western new towns. This article shows the results of Fengshui indicator applications to two news town cities in the United Kingdom: Letchworth, the first garden city in the world, and Milton Keynes, the last new town in the United Kingdom. The results imply that Fengshui indicators can be used for analysing not only Eastern cities but also Western cities. This finding confirms that Fengshui is a philosophy rather than a skill of geomancy, which considers a fundamental principle that human and environment co-exist.
