장아이링의 단편소설 ｢아샤오의 슬픔｣은 쑤저우 출신인 가정부 아샤오의 자질구레 한 가사일로 채워진 일상을 서양인 골드 선생을 중심으로 한 서구문화와의 관계 속 에서 그려냄으로써 문화적 혼종성을 드러내고 있다. 아샤오와 골드 선생은 전쟁이라 는 재난 상황 속에서 생존을 위해 복잡한 협상과 다양한 변화를 드러낸다. 특히 아 샤오는 골드 선생으로 대표되는 지배문화에 예속되지 않은 채, 떠나온 고향과 이주 한 공간 사이에서 문화적 협상을 통한 혼종적 정체성을 만들어 나간다. 서양인 고용 주와의 관계를 중심으로 가정부 아샤오의 일상생활에 대해 세세하게 묘사하는 이 작 품은 서양과 동양, 식민과 제국, 지배와 피지배라는 이분법적 세계관이 균열되어 나 타난다는 점에서 주목할 만하다.

Ah Xiao’s Unhappy Autumn reveals cultural hybridity by portraying the daily life filled with the trivial housework of the main character Ah Xiao, who is from a rural area. This novel, which describes Ah Xiao’s daily life in detail, focusing on his relationship with his Western employer. it reveals a dichotomous worldview of colonization and empire, domination and subjugation between the East and the West. Ah Xiao leaves her rural hometown and is placed in three cultures: rural areas, Shanghai, and the West by working as a housekeeper at a foreigner’s house in Shanghai. In this novel, Ah Xiao is a multilayered cultural hybrid who speaks not only his hometown dialect and Shanghai dialect but also English by working as a nanny at a Western home, experiencing multilayered cultural hybridity. Therefore, this paper focuses on the cultural hybridity experienced by Ah Xiao from rural areas who works at a Western home in Shanghai and examines the process of identity formation and the meaning of hybridity in this novel. In this novel, Shanghai is depicted as a settlement for foreigners and a hybrid community rather than its previous splendor, and phenomena that operate differently from the dichotomous worldview centered on the West can be found. And these complex and diverse hybrid characteristics revealed by these characters are elements that cannot be understood simply as Chinese tradition and Western dichotomous categories, which can be interpreted as a space for cultural negotiation.
