본 연구의 목적은 마이크 니콜스 감독이 2001년 미국에서 개봉한 영화 <위트>에 나타난 죽음의 존엄성과 웰다잉의 필요성에 관한 논의를 수행하는 것이다. <위트>는 존 던의 시적 장치였던 위트, 아이러니, 그리고 역설이 여주인공이 직면한 상황과 연계성을 지니면서 전개된다. 입원하기 전 이성과 냉정, 그리고 학문적 열정을 지니고 저명한 영문학자였던 여주인공은 역설적 상황의 재현 대상으로 활용되고 있다. 이러한 과정은 여주인공이 학문의 주체에서 연구 대상으로 전락한 상황을 드러낸다. 병실에 입원하기 전 여주인공은 인생의 본질과 가치를 열정적 학문 탐구와 냉철함에서 찾고자 했다. 그러나 고통스러운 치료 과정에서 학문 연구의 주체가 아닌 대상으로 전락한 여주인공은 인생의 진정한 가치는 친절함, 배려, 결론적으로 여주인공은 죽음의 주체적 선택을 통해서 독자들에게 위트의 현실 재현, 웰다잉 구현, 그리고 죽음에 대한 새로운 인식을 제공한다.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the dignity of death and the need for well-dying as depicted in the movie Wit, released in the United States in 2001 by director Mike Nichols. In Wit, the poet John Donne’s poetic devices of wit, irony, and paradox are developed in connection with the situation faced by the heroine. The heroine, who was a renowned English scholar with reason, cool-headedness, and academic passion before her hospitalization, is used as an object of reproduction of a paradoxical situation. This process reveals the situation in which the female protagonist was reduced from a subject of study to an object of research. Before being admitted to the hospital, the heroine sought to find the essence and value of her life through passionate academic pursuit and cool-headedness. However, during the painful process of her treatment, the heroine is reduced to an object rather than a subject of academic study, and she realizes that the true value of life is found in kindness, consideration, and empathy. In conclusion, the heroine allows her readers to experience the incarnation of wit, the need for well-dying, and a new awakening to death through her subjective choice of death.
