재즈는 대중음악의 대표적인 장르들 중 하나이자, 대중음악사의 선두에 위치한 장르이다. 대 중음악학의 선구자로 불리는 아도르노(Theodor Adorno)도 이 장르의 중요성을 기반으로 재즈를 중심으로 한 글들을 출판함으로써 이에 대한 학제적 논의를 이끌었다. 그의 재즈 논의는 1930년 대를 시작으로 1950년대까지 이어졌으며, 그의 글은 재즈에 대한 학제적 논의의 기반이 되었다. 그럼에도 그의 재즈에 대한 논의는 많은 비판을 야기했다. 이 연구는 비판에 가려져있던 아도르 노의 원문을 재조명했다. 그의 원문 분석을 통해, 그의 글로 당대 재즈를 재구성하고 아도르노가 재즈 논의를 통해 밝히고자 했던 바를 파악했다. 이를 통해, 아도르노가 재즈를 비판할 뿐 아니 라 재즈를 상품으로 변모시킨 문화산업 시스템에 비판을 가하고 있다는 핵심을 이끌어냈다. 그 의 논의는 역사적으로 재즈 초기의 전반적인 외양과 내양을 다루고 있다는 점에 있어서 사료적인 비평으로 의미를 가지며, 음악적으로 재즈에 대한 음악분석을 시도했다는 점에 있어서 새로운 지평을 열었다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 더 나아가, 현재 소비되고 재생산되는 밈(Meme) 문화와 미디어에서 재현하는 재즈를 살펴보면, 그의 논의는 대중음악 생산 시스템적인 측면에서 시대에 구애 받지 않는 일반성을 지니고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

As one of the most important and historical genre in popular music, Jazz is constantly produced and reproduced through media and also, it had engaged in various research fields, especially sociology and study of popular music. While Adorno is considered as the pioneer of popular music study, his jazz essays had been often condemned due to several reasons. Separated from those criticism, this study aims to analyze Adorno’s discussion focused on Jazz. Based on his essays related to Jazz, this research organize and reconstruct jazz in 1930s which was the starting point of that history, based on the aspects of jazz that Adorno had highlighted through his discussions. With this analysis, Adorno’s main point on jazz was not only about disapproval on itself but also on the mass production system. Historically, his essays on Jazz is essential in that the writings itself is the record of early Jazz or Swing in 1930s. And in musical perspective, Adorno happened to be the first person to analyze product of cultural industry focusing on musical elements, which in turn, unexpectedly opened a new path for analysis on popular music and culture. As his discussions remain as significant root for jazz researches afterwards, his essays also have valid points, applicable to the modern cultural industry, regardless of the era which he captured the exact initiative moment of commodification of jazz and music.
