By examining Miss Brill, an elderly woman who derives fleeting solace from her imagined companions, alongside Jimmy, a man grappling with marital and existential challenges, this study explores how emotional isolation evolves into a yearning for authenticity and healing. In Miss Brill, the protagonist’s delight in observing life is shattered by overheard ridicule, leading to a profound confrontation with her solitude. Similarly, Jimmy’s ambiguous encounter with a stranger in Floating Bridge results in a moment of emotional clarity that alters his self-perception. These pivotal narrative moments illustrate how alienation, despite its painful nature, can become a pathway to self-awareness and latent hope.
