『황무지』 전체의 핵심어에는 ‘기독교’가 자리 잡고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 제Ⅴ부인 「천둥이 말한 것」에는 기독교적 시각으로의 연구가 수행되지 않았다. 그래서 이 연구는 기독교를 핵심어로 설정하여 추적해 보았다. 사실 「천둥이 말한 것」이란 제목의 출현부터 『성경』에서 출발했으며 이어서 엘리엇은 기독교의 핵심축인 예수 그리스도의 체포와 예수 그리스도의 부재를 물과 가뭄의 이미지로 사용하며 또한 천둥 역시 『성경』에도 그대로 나타난다. 아울러 자기 희생과 헌신에 대한 이야기 역시 기독교 『성경』에 그대로 나타나는 것으로 보아 「천둥이 말한 것」의 핵심에도 기독교가 자리 잡고 있음을 알 수 있다.

Many researchers pay attention to The Waste Land and its Christianity. This paper is to study “What the Thunder Said” from a Christian point of view. This work implies Christianity from the first to the last. The main topic is also from the Bible. According to which, thundering marks God’s will for humans. And Eliot uses Christian image markedly throughout “What the Thunder Said”; for example, the arrested scene of Jesus Christ and the image of water, which means the lack of the spiritual life. If humans obey God’s Word more actively, there would be a plenty of water. Also Eliot demands that humans should give up their selfishness and passions. Emphasizing this, Eliot suggests that humans all should return to God, recovering spirituality and re-seeking peaceful minds. Judging from these aspects, Eliot must have created “What the Thunder Said” based on Christianity.
