Air pollution characteristics and the influence of sea breeze on air pollution concentration were studied using the data measured at 7 air quality continuous monitoring stations in Pusan, 1993. Maximum air pollution concentration in Pusan was Gamjeondong for SO_2, Sinpyeongdong for TSP, Daeyeondong for O_3, Kwangbokdong for NO_2, Beomcheondong for CO and all substances were under annual ambient air quality standards. Increased rate of concentration for sea breeze was 24.4% for SO_2, 31.5% for TSP, 80% for O_3, 26.7% for NO_2, 15.7% for CO. Frequencies distribution of SO_2, TSP, O_3, NO_2 and CO concentration for sea breeze moved toward high concentration class.

The diffusion of the pollutants released into atmosphere is dependent on its chemical reaction, topography and micrometeorological characteristics. The purpose of the study is to investigate how much micrometeorological characteristics such as stability, wind speed and mixing height affect the diffusion of the air pollutants. For this purpose, this paper let 1) the basic theory be K-theory, 2) eddy diffusivity and wind speed be dependent on mixing height and stability, and 3) Crout method be used for numerical calculation. The result was 1) the more unstable condition, the higher mixing height and the higher wind speed are, the lower pollutants concentration appears, 2) the most intensive effect on the distribution of the pollutant concentration is the atmospheric stability.

We have studied the characteristics of wind over Pusan coastal area in order to precisely predict surface wind having an important effect on oil spill fate using the data on surface observation of Pusan, Kimhae and Gadeogdo island which are collected during the 3 years from 1988 to 1990. We also investigated the correlation of the surface wind between Pusan, Kimhae and Gadeogdo island. In both Pusan areas and Kimhae, the land and sea breeze occurs during the whole season except for winter. The occurrence frequency of land and sea breeze is significantly high from April to August. The correlation of surface wind between Pusan, Kimhae and Gadeogdo island surface wind is high in the daytime. The occurrence frequency of sea breeze in the Kimhae areas is higher than that in pusan on the basis of the present criteria. For monthly occurrence, Pusan has the highest occurrence frequency of the sea breeze in August and Kimhae has in May.

The land and sea breeze over the Pusan coastal area is studied by three dimensional mesoscale numerical model. According to the results of the simulation experiments, both Pusan areas and Kimhae areas, the sea breeze began at 0800LST and the strongest at 1500LST and then at 1800LST. After midnight, the sea breeze changed about the land breeze and become weaker than that of the sea breeze in the daytime. Comparisons between calculations and observations showed that the characteristics of diurnal variation and v-component of the wind velocity relatively is similar to the Pusan areas. On the Kimhae areas, however, observations showed time lag which compared to the results of simulation experiments in the velocity of sea breeze and diurnal variation. From the above results, comparisons between calculations and observations is much more similar to the coastal areas than on the inland area.

Development of cumulus is studied by numerically integrating the equation of motion, equations of conservation for water vapor mixing ratio, and the thermodynamic energy equation. We use the terrain-following coordinate system called z^*-coordinate system, in which we can easily treat any calculation domain with terrain configuration such as mountains. The model domain of calculation is restricted vertically to 4.8km and horizontally to 100 km, has a bell-type mountain in the centeral part. Four cases are considered, one in a neutral environment, second in a slightly stable environment, third in a environment decreasing water content with low value of initial water vapor mixing ratio, the fourth in a case with higher vapor gradient. The more the atmosphere is unstable, the more cumulus develops easily and the more water vapors is abundant, the more cumulus develops easily too. More detailed cloud microphysics parameterizations and wet deposition must be considered to use in air pollutants prediction model.
