Internal sperm storage after mating is important for insect reproduction, because it permits delayed fertilisation, and post-copulatory mate choice in polyandrous females. The polyandry is common in many animal taxa including insects, because it increases female fitness by reducing the risk of infertility and providing opportunities for sperm competition and choice. The reproductive success of males, on the other hand, often depends upon avoidance of sperm competition by preventing mated females from copulating and receiving sperm from other male suitors. A widespread strategy used by males is the use of the male seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) that form the mating plug and alter female behaviors, for example by suppressing mating receptivity and elevating egg-laying. Under these circumstances, females are expected to evolve mechanism(s) to control exposure to the male SFPs in order to maximize fitness by balancing the positive and negative impacts of polyandry. Here, we discover that Drosophila melanogaster females eject male ejaculates 1-6 h after mating with a stereotypic behaviour, and that this is regulated by a brain neuropeptide pathway composed of diuretic hormone 44 (Dh44), and its receptor Dh44R1. We showed that suppressing Dh44 or Dh44R1 signals in the brain expedites sperm ejection, whereas enhancing Dh44 or Dh44R1 signals delays sperm ejection. This study uncovers a molecular mechanism by which females can influence sperm competition and selection, and counter actively the negative impact of polyandry.

Detailed low spectral resolution observations of the spectrum have been made for three early spectral type standard stars, HR718, HR1544, HR3454, respectively, for the wavelength region 4,300 A to 7,500 A, using the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) Middle- Dispersion Spectrograph. These standard stars were chosen from well-known bright northern standard stars. All of the observed long slit spectral data has been reduced and analyzed using the IRAF reduction procedure. The derived extinction coefficients are compared with the other observatory result. The derived value can be used in the determination of flux calibration of BOAO spectroscopic observation. However, until the high quality data are secured from a new series of observation in the blue region and are re-analyzed together, the extinction coefficients below the 4,000 A wavelength remains unknown.

We obtained the CN(ΔV=0 ΔV=0 ) and C2(ΔV=0,±1 C2(ΔV=0,±1 ) spectra of comet Hale-Bopp(C/1995 O1) at the Kyunghee Observatory and Bohyunsan Astronomical Observatory between March 7 and May 12, 1997 The fluxes for each molecular band were measured and then the production rates and column densities of CN and C2 C2 were calculated using a simple model. The resultantproduction rates of CN and C2 C2 are logQ(CN)=27.4 at r=0.94 AU(preperihelion) and logQ(C2)=27.3 logQ(C2)=27.3 at r=0.94 AU(postperihelion), respectively.

Bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) is one of most important diseases in Cucurbitaceae due to infection of Acidovorax citrulli, causing huge economic losses damage worldwide. This seedborn disease spread rapidly at period of high temperature and humidity. The eco-friendly farming is getting popular. So far there was no effective agent to control BFB in eco-friendly farming. Therefore, effect of the material based on chinese nut-gall extract with antibacterial activity against BFB to was tested against A. citrulli. Different hosts showed various symptoms of BFB. Liquid formulation among exhibited most effective anti-bacterial activity on A. citrulli. Pot experiment in greenhouse showed the potential as an control agent of BFB in cucurbits. The treatment of material based on chinese nut-gall extract showed the positive effect on survival of the watermelon seedling and on the length of the cucumber seedling treated with A. citrulli. We cautiously conclude that the material based on chinese nut-gall extract used in this study may be good agents against major diseases of cucurbits in the future even though it is require to be tested with more study on field test.

Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) is transmitted by a root-inhabiting Polymyxa graminis (P. graminis) and thus the disease is called “soil-borne”. In this study, the presence of P. graminis was confirmed by PCR test based on specific sequences of P. graminis type Ⅰ (P. graminis f. sp. temperata) Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS). P. graminis was detected in the BaYMV infected soil and root of barley plants. The monitoring of P. graminis was conducted in March 2015 in 8 korean provinces. It was detected in the soil of all collected regions. This is the first report on a P. graminis a survey of Korea.

Recently it was known that the problems of nearshore processes and damage of berth and counter facilities frequently had appeared at the small fishery port, such as Daebang near Samcheonpo city, Korea. Here we try to analyze the impact of the rearrangement of counter facilities and berth layout adopted for tranquility of its inner harbor. Because this harbor is being connected to Daebang channel, the rearrangement of the structures might affect to the current speed and direction and wave height, so do to the sea bottom undulation. Therefore, we made model test for the several layouts of the berth and breakwater in this area. Numerical model result shows that the bottom was eroded by 1m by tidal currents and the speed of flow did not shrink, even after the construction work was completed. The direction of the sand movement was downdrift. Although the model study gave reasonable description of beach processes and approach channel sedimentation mechanism, it is necessary to compare with the field history, including the records of waves, tides and bottom materials, etc. for better prediction.

Gunsan-Janghang Harbor is located at the mouth of Gum River, on the central west coast of Korea The harbor and coastal boundaries are protected from the effects of the open ocean by natural coastal islands and shoals due to depositions from the river, and two breakwaters. The navigation channel commences at the gap formed by the outer breakwater and extends through a bay via a long channel formed by an isolated jetty. For better understanding and analysis of wave transformation process where a wide coastline changes appear due to on-going reclamation works, we applied the spectral wave model including wind effect to the related site, together with the energy balance models. This paper summarizes comparisons of coastal responses predicted by several numerical wave predictions obtained at the coastal waters near Gunsan-Janghang Harbor. Field and numerical model investigations were initially conducted for the original navigation channel management project. We hope to contribute from this study that coastal engineers are able to use safety the numerical models in the area of port and navigational channel design.
