The purpose of this research is to review historical development of Islamic finance in individual East Asian economies, including China, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, and examine the success factors of the Hong Kong Sukuk issuances in 2014-2017. The research is a qualitative study applying case study method. It is found that the East Asian economies do play efforts to develop their Islamic capital markets although they have very limited size of Muslim population. Their progress on this development generally remains to be slow. The Hong Kong Sukuk is a breakthrough, carrying a total issuance value of US$3 billion. The Sukuk issuances, treated as a kind of asset-backed securities with restrictions on financing purposes, are distributed to international investors by investment banks from Hong Kong, Middle East and Malaysia. Success factors of these issuances include involvement of an issuer with high credit quality, recognition by central bank for using the Sukuk in its discount facility for commercial banks, centralized clearing services for the Sukuk and global banking network for underwriting the Sukuk. The lessons from the Hong Kong Sukuk are good references for other economies to develop their regional Islamic capital markets and to integrate the markets into the global capital market.

We are currently developing a high-throughput single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping service at IRRI to accelerate progress in rice breeding by providing rapid and cost-effective marker services. SNP marker development and validation is being performed based on cloned genes and QTLs, GWAS hits, and whole genome sequence data to identify predictive SNP markers at important genes for key traits for the breeding programs. Trait-based and targeted SNPs are being deployed in sets of 24 and 96 SNPs on a Fluidigm EP1 system. At the same time, 384 SNP sets and a 6K SNP chip developed by Susan McCouch at Cornell University are being used for higher density genome scans on an Illumina system. Genotyping by sequencing (GBS) approaches with 96 and 384 barcoded samples per sequence lane are also being evaluated in comparison to SNP array technology based on the number of loci, call rates, turnaround times, and cost per sample. An efficient sample processing workflow with an integrated LIMS is also being optimized to enable high throughput genotyping with sample tracking to minimize errors. Moreover, web-based SNP data analysis tools have been deployed through the IRRI Galaxy workbench to speed up SNP data analysis. Future efforts will focus on large-scale deployment of GBS across breeding materials to enable QC genotyping, tracking of donor introgressions, and integration of genome-wide prediction into the variety development pipelines. The large-scale application of high-density markers will help transform IRRI’s rice breeding programs and increase the rate of genetic gain towards developing high-yielding, stress-tolerant varieties for target environments and market segments

헬라 철학에서 유래된 영지주의 사상들은 초대교회시 이미 여러가지 초기적인 형태로 나타나고 있었으나 본격적인 사상체계를 갖춘 영지주의의 존재를 입증 할 수 있는 문서는 오늘날 까지도 없다. 다만 기독교의 영향을 받은 영지주의는 이 천년 기독교역사 가운데 강한 영향력이 있는 이교가 되었는데 그 이유는 무엇일까? 어떠한 체계화를 통해 그런 지속성을 갖게 되었는지를 추론해 보고자 한다. 물론 각자의 독창성을 발휘하는 특색이 있었던 반면, 이러한 다양한 영지주의의 사상들을 관찰해 보면 어떤 패턴처럼 공유된 연속성을 이레네우스는 가늠 할 수 있었다. 그래서 그는 나름대로 다양한 영지주의 창시자들이 주장한 교리적 연속성과 특성들을 정리 하는 카달록을 소유하고 있었다. 이에 따르면 각양 기독교적 영지주의와 그리스도의 성육신을 부인하는 모든 이교들은 싸이몬 마구스를 비롯하여 발단 되었으며, 싸이몬의 측근에서 메낸더가 그의 후계자로 등장했다고 말한다. 그러나 이 두사람은 각각 초창기 시절의 원동력을 일시적이나마 카리스마적인 구세주의 역할로 구심점을 이뤘다면, 다음세대의, 그리고 지속되는 영지주의란, 그 이상, 아니면 그 외의 것들을 갖추었을 때 지구력이 있는 종교로 서 존재하게 된 것이다. 이 시점에서 케린투스가 주장하는 교리내용은 그 당시 신비적인 부분을 적당히 갖추었던 헬라 문화가 실질적인 신인관계를 표출하는 스토리라 할 수 있다. 구체적으로, 케린투스가 영지주의를 다분히 지속성이 있는 종교가 되도록 했다면 결국 두 가지 중요한 패러다임으로 나타나는데, 이것은 도케티즘의 구세주 (Docetic Savior) 와 영지주의적 부활 (non-bodily resurrection)이다. 영지주의에 있어서 이러한 패러다임의 가치는 그 뒤에 오는 싸터나이너스 와 벨렌티너스가 ‘divine spark’나 ‘divine seed’를 통해 영지주의적 부활을 설명 하고 있다는 것이며, 이러한 본격적인 영지주의로 전개 해 나가기 까지는 케린투스가 초석을 마련 했다는 점이다. 케린투스가 싸터나이너스에게 직접 영향을 미쳤다는 언급은 없으나, 이레네우스의 ‘이단반박’에 따르면, 두 사마리아 출신인 싸이몬과 그의 후계자 메낸더가 유사했고, 케린투스와 싸터나이너스는 소아시아의 동시대의 영지주의의 리더였으며, 그들은 유대교적인 뿌리의 특성을 갖춘 인간론, 도케티즘적인 기독론, 그리고 도덕적인 강조점 등이 있음을 볼수있다. 그외에 ‘사도서신’ 은 싸이몬 과 케린투스 두 사람만을 명시 하고 있는데, 싸이몬 이후의 케린투스의 비성서적 부활의 가르침을 경고하고 있는 것을 보면 이 같은 입장을 강화하고 있다. 이와같이 케린투스의 독창적으로 계발한 두가지의 결과는 영지주의의 지속성을 기인 했을것 이라는 개연성을 갖는다.

There are observational difficulties determining dynamical masses of binary star components in the upper HR diagram both due to the scarcity of massive binary systems and spectral and photometric contamination produced by the strong wind outflows in these systems. We discuss how variable X-ray emission in these systems produced by wind-wind col\-lisions in massive binaries can be used to constrain the system parameters, with application to two important massive binaries, Eta Carinae and WR 140.
