Modification of C/C composite bipolar plate for improving electrical conductivity was carried out by addition of electroconductive carbon black (EC-CB). Carbon black was carefully mixed to methanol-containing phenolic resin, impregnated into 2D-carbon fabrics, hot pressed and then carbonized to obtain composite plate. Inclusion of electro-conductive carbon black enhanced the electrical conductivity of the C/C composites by increasing the conduction path. Addition of 10 vol% carbon black increased the electrical conductivity from 5.5/Ωcm to 32/Ωcm and reduced the crack formation by filling effect, resulting in the increase of flexural properties of composite plate. However, at carbon black content over 10 vol%, flexural properties decreased by delaminating role of excess carbon black at the interface in C/C composites.

Adsorption and desorption characteristics of methyl iodide at high temperature conditions up to 250℃ by TEDA-impregnated activated carbon, which is used for radioiodine retention in nuclear facility, was experimentally evaluated. In the range of temperature from 30℃ to 250℃, the adsorption capacity of base activated carbon decreased sharply with increasing temperature but that of TEDA-impregnated activated carbon showed higher value even at high temperature ranges. Especially, the desorption amount of methyl iodide on TEDA-impregnated carbon represented lower value than that on unimpregnated carbon. The breakthrough curves of methyl iodide in the fixed bed packed with base carbon and TEDA-impregnated activated carbon at high temperature were compared. TEDA-impregnated activated carbon would be applicable to adsorption process up to 150℃ for the removal of radioiodine in a nuclear facility.

The C-type mesophase pitch-based carbon fiber (C-MPCF) was prepared throuch C-type spinnerette and compared the mechanical properties to those of round type mesophase pitch fiber (R-MPCF) and C-type isotropic pitch fiber (C-iPCF). The tensile strength and modulus of C-MPCF were about 18.6% and 35.7% higher than those of R-MPCF. The tensile strength of C-MPCF was 62% higher than that of C-iPCF of the same 8μm thickness because of more linear transverse texture, which could be easily converted to graphitic crystallinity during heat treatment. The torsional rigidity of C-MPCF was 2.37 times higher than that of R-MPCF. The electrical resistivity of C-MPCF was 8μΩ·m. The C-iPCF shows far lower electrical resistivity than R-iPCF as well as the mesophase carbon fiber because of better alignment of texture to the fiber axis.
