        It is necessary that the basic concept of rural planning update from economics based on the production and sale into experience of natural resources and traditional culture. For the purpose of set up development direction for rural district, it is requisite to the multivariate analysis. In this study, the methods of the classification of rural village with existing data are studied, the results looking for applying to the making of principal viewpoint of the development. The analysis methods of classification are used the PCA, CA and combination of these, and making the revised method for localization of the rural district. In this study, we implement classification of regional pattern analysis for the planning of rural district in Chungbuk province.

        The objective of this study is to propose the whole idealistical process for ecological area zoning based on the natural environment analysis. In order to draw out the ecological zoning, this study used the remote sensing, GIS method and field survey. As a result of this study showed that it was helpful in establishing development direction of Midong Mountain, minimizing the impact on environment by drawing out a development suitable land based on the objective standards and data and also preventing the misconduct development in advance.

        This study is an attempt to classify climatic regions of Korea based on the data of sunshine duration and to clarify the characteristics of sunshine for each divided regions. The data used in this study are the mean values of monthly and ten-daily sunshine duration, sunshine percentage, solar radiation and cloud amount obtained from 63 weather stations of the Korea Meteorological Administration during the period of 1974∼1993. The characteristics of annual change of sunshine percentage, annual duration of sunshine, percentage of sunshine, annual radiation, amount of cloud, days of sunshine percentage above 80% and days of sunless are investigated by the mean values of the stations belong to divided regions. The ward method of hierarchical cluster analysis is adopted to the analysis of data for the regional division. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows. (1) The sunshine regions of Korea can be divided into six regions of the central west, central east, south west, south east, Ullung-do and Cheju-do. These are strongly affected by the distribution of inclined slopes taking account of the topographic characteristics of Korea. (2) Annual distribution shows the sunshine duration of 1777∼2287 hours, sunshine percentage of 40∼53%, solar radiation of 3469∼4637 MJ/㎡, cloud amount of 5.0∼6.1, days of sunshine percentage above 80% of 53∼116days and sunless days of 46∼71days. (3) The types of annual change of sunshine percentages is classified with four types of minimum in July and maximum in October, minimum in July and maximum in December, high in May and October and low in July and January, high in May and November and low in June and January. (4) The Iong-term trend of sunshine duration decrease in peninsula area but increase in island area and the long-term inclination of cloud amount is almost zero. The author believe this tendency is related to a pollutional turbidity than a cloud amount in inland area.

        As a rational decision-making process of county-level area development, this study designed 3-step framework : function-giving(areal analysis) on unit planning area by decision matrix of land suitability, check of typical characteristics of each function area and formulation of its future development strategies. Two alternatives were suggested as the areal analysis method, of which one is equal ordering / valuing technique of checking indices for land suitability classfication and the other preferential weighting technique. And then, under the algorithm specially defined in this study, land suitability maps(Fig.2,3) of the case study area (Seungju-county area, Chonnam-province, Korea) were drawn from the areal analysis results. By use of land suitability classification results, unique characteristics of typical function areas were defined (on 7 types of alternative 1 , 8 types of II ) and their future development strategies were formulated in the case study area, According to the categorization criteria in this study, all the villages of the case area were classfied as a suitable type of function areas illustrated in this study.

        An attempt was made to study the subdivision of Korea by the annual amount and the annual change pattern of monthly precipitation days(that is one of the important elements of the precipitation characteristics), using the mean values for the years 1961-1990 at the 68 stations. The amplitudes of annual change were normalized and,using these values,the principal component analysis was applied to determine the annual change patterns.The results show that they are expressed by the combinations of the three change patterns in almost whole regions of Korea.As a result,the annual change pattern of precipitation days in Korea is classified into 8 types from A to e,in detail,36 types from A0 to e②.And regional division of precipitation days in Korea is divided into 13 regions from Ⅰa to ⅢC,into detail,41 regions from I a0 to ⅢHCl.

        For formulation of the rational land us2 plan in regional base, it is a basic and prior condition to categorize total planning area into some functional subregions by purposely-selected indicators. As one of quantitive approaches to the areal categorization in rural area, Principal Component Analysis(PCA) was introduced and testified its applicability through a case study on Sunheungdistrict(called as myun in Korea) area, Youngpoong-county, Kyungbuk-province, Korea. Areal analysis by PCA was carried out on rurality and urbanity of parish-level area(ri in Korea) respectively. By use of PCA analysis results, classifying matrix was made through categorization of both index scores. Among 18 ri's of the case study area, 12 was classified as rural-dominated areas, 2 as urban- dominated areas, and reamaining 3 as intermediate areas.

        As a initial methodological approach to rational land use planning in the county-level area, three types of land suitability classification techniques were examined from the viewpoint of their practical applicability through the case study of Seungju-gun area, Chonnam-province, Korea : major factors' criteria(method I ), principal component analysis( I ), and local monitoring( R( ). Each method has its strong and weak points as shown in Tab.-5. Therefore, when its practical application, there seem to be wide-range methodological selectivities from exclusive use of the best one to intermethodological combination of related ones In the beginning stage, intermethodological combination of all three types were tried to formulate the best solution possible. However, because of reliability problem of method R accrued from non- uniformity of evaluators'quality, only two methods( 1 , E ) were combined into a new evaluation method The applied results of the new combined method to case study area are shown in Fig.-2, 3 and 4.
