        The resistance levels against carbamates (CB) and organophosphates (OP) were determined through bioassay and quantitative sequencing (QS) methods in 16 field populations of Nilaparvata lugens. The resistance levels to CB and OP by bioassay were 1.3~47.5-fold and 1.4~14.4-fold higher than a susceptible strain, respectively. The QS protocol was established to determine the allele frequencies of eight point mutations on acetylcholinesterase putatively associated CB and OP resistance. The allele frequencies of four mutations in local populations (G119A, F/S330Y, F331H and I332L) ranged from ca. 0.0~51.7%, 1.0~44.3%, 8.5~57.3% and 7.12~56.6%, respectively. The average prediction limits were –9.6±5.1~7.7±2.9%. The F330Y, F331H and I332L were tightly linked each other, suggesting these mutations may occur simultaneously. In the correlation analysis, G119A was not well correlated with both insecticides (r2= less 0.25), whereas F/S330Y, F331H and I332L showed better correlation with the resistance levels of carbamate (r2=0.590) than organophosphate (r2=0.235). This finding indicates that F/S330Y, F331H and I332L mutation frequencies are suitable for detecting carbamate resistance in N. lugens. QS will be applicable for the rapid monitoring of resistance levels to CB insecticides in N. lugens.

        Five field-collected populations (TR-CP, UR-CP, JR-CP, GR-CP, and BR-CP colonies) of northern house mosquito, Culex pipiens pallens, identified by polymer chain reaction (PCR) were tested for susceptibility to 10 different insecticides by direct-contact mortality bioassay in comparison with an insecticide-susceptible KS-CP strain. Marked regional variations of insecticide susceptibility were observed. Extremely high to high levels of resistance were obtained: bifenthrin, resistance ratio (RR) = 1–520; β-cyfluthrin, RR = 16–397; α -cypermethrin, RR = 9–343; deltamethrin, RR = 1–40; etofenprox, RR = 2–42; permethrin, RR = 2–12; chlorpyrifos, RR = 2–675; fenitrothion, RR = 0.5–364; and fenthion, RR = 2–360. All of the colonies were susceptible to one or more of the insecticides examined. These results indicate that careful selection and rotational use of these insecticides should result in continued satisfactory control against field populations of northern house mosquito.

        It is necessary to develop new methods to prevent catastrophic failure of structural material in order to avoid accidents and conserve natural and energy resources. Design of intelligent materials with a self-diagnosing function to prevent fatal fracture of structural materials was achieved by smart composites consisting of carbon fiber tows or carbon powders with a small value of ultimate elongation and glass fiber tows with a large value of ultimate elongation. The changes in electrical resistance of CF-GFRP/GFRP (carbon fiber and glass fiber-reinforced plastics/glass fiber-reinforced plastics) composites increased abruptly with increasing strain, and a tremendous change was seen at the transition point where carbon fiber tows were broken. Therefore, the composites were not to monitor damage from the early stage. On the other hand, the change in electrical resistance of CP-GFRP/GFRP (carbon powder dispersed in glass fiber-reinforced plastics/glass fiber-reinforced plastics) composites increased almost linearly in proportion to strain. CP-GFRP/GFRP composites are superior to CF-GFRP/GFRP composites in terms of their capability to monitor damage by measuring change in electrical resistance from the early stage of damage. However, the former was inferior to the latter as an application because of the difficulties of mass production and high cost. A method based on monitoring damage by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of structural materials is promising for improved reliability of the material.

        Two point mutations (V419L and L925I) in the voltage-sensitive sodium channel (VSSC) α-subunit gene have been identified in deltamethrin-resistant bedbugs. To predict resistance allele frequencies of sodium channel mutations (V419L and L925I) in bedbugs at a population level, we developed quantitative sequencing (QS) protocol. The signal ratios between resistant and susceptible nucleotides were generated from sequencing chromatogram and plotted against the corresponding resistance allele frequencies. Linear regression coefficients of the plots were close to 1 (r2 = 0.9928 and 0.9998), suggesting that the signal ratios are reliable correlated with the resistance allele frequencies. To enable on-site monitoring of pyrethroid resistance in bed bugs, residual contact vial (RCV) bioassay method was established and used to determine median lethal concentration (LC50) values to deltamethrin for various bed bug strains. Resistance allele frequencies in these bedbug strains predicted by QS were correlated well with the RCV bioassay results, confirming the roles of two mutations in pyrethroid resistance. Taken together, employment of QS in conjunction with RCV bioassay should greatly facilitate resistance monitoring of bedbugs in the field.

        The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L., is an important pest of livestock. Stable flies are considered as mechanical vectors of veterinary disease. Pyrethroids and organophosphates have been widely used for stable fly control. To establish resistance monitoring molecular tool, we isolated the partial cDNA and genomic fragments of voltage-sensitive sodium channel and acetylcholinesterase genes encompassing the well known conserved sites for resistance-associated mutations. To examine the current status of stable fly resistance to pyrethroids and organophosphates mediated by the nerve insensitivity mechanism in Korean population of S. calcitrans, DNA-based genotyping in conjunction with residual contact vial (RCV) bioassay were conducted with 11 representative regional field populations. No resistance-associated mutations were detected in these S. calcitrans populations, suggesting that these populations are likely still susceptible to both pyrethroids and organophosphates. Establishment of RCV bioassay protocol and availalbility of target site sequence information will greatly facilitate resistance monitoring of S. calcitrans in the field.

        The failure behaviours of unidirectional pultruded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites were monitored by the electrical resistance measurement during tensile loading, three-point-bending, interlaminar shear loading. The tensile failure behaviour of carbon fiber tows was also investigated by the electrical resistance measurement. Infrared thermography non-destructive evaluation was performed in real time during tensile test of CFRP composites to validate the change of microdamage in the materials. Experiment results demonstrated that the CFRP composites and carbon fiber tows were damaged by different damage mechinsms during tensile loading, for the CFRP composites, mainly being in the forms of matrix damage and the debonding between matrix and fibers, while for the carbon fiber tows, mainly being in the forms of fiber fracture. The correlation between the infrared thermographs and the change in the electrical resistance could be regarded as an evidence of the damage mechanisms of the CFRP composites. During three-point-bending loading, the main damage forms were the simultaneity fracture of matrix and fibers firstly, then matrix cracking and the debonding between matrix and fiber were carried out. This results can be shown in Fig. 9(a) and (b). During interlaminar shear loading, the change in the electrical resistance was related to the damage degree of interlaminar structure. Electrical resistance measurement was more sensitive to the damage behaviour of the CFRP composites than the stress/time curve.

        전국 8개 지역별 각 사과원에서 채집된 점박이응애(Tetranychus urticae Koch)에 대한 저항성 정도를 일본 감수성 계통과 비교한 결과 지역별 현저한 감수성 차이를 보였다. Azocyclotin, fenpropathrin, propargite 및 abamectin에 대해서는 낮거나 중간 정도의 저항성을, dicofol, fenpyroximate 및 pyridaben에 대해서는 높은 저항성을 나타내었다. 이들 계통은 한종 또는 두종 이상의 약제에 대해 감수성을 보여 특정 지역에 대해서는 적당한 살비제의 선택적 이용으로 점박이응애를 효과적으로 방제할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

        Background : This study was conducted to investigate the resistance of Collectotrichum gloeosporioides to 9 fungicides. Methods and Results : With 3 isolates of Collectotrichum gloeosporioides obtained from diseased leaf of ginseng, it was conducted to detect the fungicide resistance of C. gloeosporioides against 9 chemicals through an agar dilution method. PDA medium was used for monitoring the resistance. Among the chemicals, fenhexamid・prochloraz manganese complex, fluazinam and metconazole exhibited high antifungal activity to the ginseng anthracnose fungus. When measuring the effectiveness for the prevention of anthracnose, 3 fungicides at 10 ㎍/㎖ showed 88.1 - 94.7% of preventive effect against C. gloeosporioides. But, the isolates resist to dimethomorph・dithianon, iminoctadine tris (albesilate), kasugamyci n・thiophanate-methyl, dimethomorph・pyraclostrobin, azoxystrobin. Conclusion : In summary, to develop the control system with fungicides, 3 fungicides (fenhexamid・prochloraz manganese complex, fluazinam and metconazole) were applied on ginseng at the indicated time. A reduced spray program based on efficacious fungicides will be useful for ginseng growers and provide more options for controlling anthracnose in Korea.

        200m 이하의 아치 교량에서 동적 내풍 안정성은 일반적으로 일본의 Wind Resistant Design Manual for Highway Bridges에 따라 검토된다. 또한 내풍 안정성 검토는 모드 형상에 관계없이 1차 연직 진동수를 적용한다. 일본의 매뉴얼에 따라 설계된 경간장 183m의 닐슨 아치 교량에서 예상치 못한 와류 진동이 발생하였으며 이는 태풍시 교량의 모니터링 시스템에 의해 계측되었다. 본 논문에서는 태풍 발생시에 계측된 풍속, 풍향, 진동 변위와 가속도를 기반으로 닐슨 아치교량의 와류진동 특성을 분석하였다. 분석 결과 1차 연직 진동 모드가 역대칭 형상이고 2차 연직 진동 모드가 대칭 형상인 닐슨 아치교의 경우 와류 진동이 2차 연직 모드에서 지배적이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 2차 연직 진동 모드가 대칭 형상인 닐슨 아치교의 내풍 안정성 평가시에는 1차 보다 2차 연직 진동 모드가 중요한 설계 요소임을 제시하였다.
