        The purpose of this study is to analyze how grammatical patterns of command in using hedge strategies function based on the principle of relative status in the Korean language. In order to accomplish the purpose, types of command in using hedge strategies are classified. The results showed that grammatical patterns of command are functioned to save the listener’s face from a listener’s viewpoint, and to strengthen details of propositions used from a proponent’s viewpoint. Also, from a speaker’s viewpoint, they are functioned to reduce the burden of command acts, and to agree with others implicitly or to follow his or her role demanded in the conversation. It also indicated that specific patterns are selected depending on language users, and context factors such as listeners’ reactions, hierarchical relations among listeners and speakers, their closeness to each other, location and formality of context, and publicity of their topics. Based on the findings, a pedagogical implication is suggested to provide language users’ multi-faceted competence in Korean.

        Recent approaches and opinions support that shipping companies must take precautionary measures against financial risks and design steadier steps for financial management. The key to developing, implementing, and managing a successful hedging strategy is to use effective forecasting systems and appropriate financial derivative products. The key objective of this study is to control risks from bunker cost fluctuations using financial derivative products. To do so, a time-series analysis is conducted using a dataset derived from a bunker index system. The artificial neural network method is used for time-series analysis with a mean absolute percentage error of 0.9182105. Next, progress predictions of bunker costs and hedging strategies are determined to use financial derivative products against their risks. Finally, this study concludes that forward agreements can serve as the perfect protection mechanism against bunker risks in tramp shipping.

        The study aims to investigate the relationship between hedging with derivatives and subsequent firm-level stock price crash risk. Our sample consists of KOSPI- and KOSDAQ-listed companies from 2004 to 2014. The total firm-year observation is 4,886. We find that hedging with derivatives is related to greater possibilities of crash risk. The results suggest that the complexity of economic and financial reporting for derivatives may aggravate the company's information opacity, ultimately increasing the crash risk. We contribute to the growing body of literature on hedging with derivatives. Academics and practitioners have debated on whether or not hedging enhances transparency or rather makes the information environment more opaque. Theoretical research on the role of corporate hedging on information environment shows that hedging enhances earnings informativeness. Meanwhile, pieces of anecdotal and empirical evidence show that the economic and financial reporting complexity of derivatives can harm information transparency. Our results shed light on the question of whether and how hedging with derivatives affects information environment by examining the relationship between hedging with derivatives and crash risk. Furthermore, our findings provide useful insights for policymakers and practitioners. Specifically, our results raise a need for a more transparent disclosure on corporate hedging activities with derivatives.

        본 연구는 수계관리 측면에서 물 공급의 기준이 되는 하류 제어지점에서 발생할 수 있는 물 부족을 최소 허용하면서 저수지군 최적 운영방안을 제공할 수 있도록 위험도 평가기준을 목적함수 및 제약조건에 반영한 hedging rule을 혼합정수계획법(MIP, Mixed Integer Programming)으로 구성하고 이에 대한 이행도를 분석함으로써 기존의 용수공급 신뢰도에 중점을 두었던 저수지군 최적 운영 분석기법을 개선하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한강수계 5개 저수지(소양강댐, 충주댐, 화천댐, 청평댐, 팔당댐)군을 대상으로 수계관리를 위한 모형을 구축하였으며, 한강수계 내에 총 8개의 가상 제어지점을 구성하여 댐 하류 제어지점에서의 물 부족에 대해 위험도를 평가하였으며, 개발된 hedging rule의 적정성을 검증하기 위하여 2개의 유입량 계열(’93. 1월~’97. 12월, ’99. 1월~’03. 12월)에 대하여 적용 검토하였다. 팔당댐 하류 제어지점의 월별 최소유량을 비교하면 ’93. 1월~’97. 12월의 모의기간에서는 hedging rule 적용 시 317.5×106m3으로 단독운영의 310.6×106m3, 연계운영의 56.3×106m3보다 많은 유량을 보였으며, ’99. 1월~’03. 12월의 모의기간에서도 hedging rule 적용 시 243.7×106m3으로 단독운영의 204.2×106m3, 연계운영의 111.2×106m3에 비해 최소유량이 많은 것을 확인하였으며, 이는 제안한 hedging rule에 의해 하류 제어지점에서의 최대 물 부족량이 감소하는 결과를 보여주고 있다.

        The appropriate use of hedged expressions is particularly a problematic feature of non-native writers' English academic writings. This study analyses the features of hedging in NNS and NS academic essays by using two different corpora from Korean masters' students and from English native speakers in the UK. This corpus-based study focuses on the types and frequencies of epistemic devices, examining the salient features of hedging used in the Korean L2 writings. The results from both frequency and contextual analysis indicate that they rely heavily on using modal verbs and other certainty markers of adverbs, and this led to stronger and direct statements. Along with their serious confusion with impersonalized or personalized forms in relation to the usage of lexical verbs, they showed a strong preference for giving personal involvement, which occurred in specific patterns of personalized devices in conversational hedges. These patterns can be partly explained by the cultural transfer from L1 to L2 as well as lack of linguistic knowledge across different genres. The findings thus can contribute to giving some pedagogical implications for teaching alternative strategies to raise both culture and genre-specific awareness in the areas of second language pragmatics.
