The research is to evaluate the statistical difference between K-GAAP(Generally Accepted Account Principles) in 2008 year and K-IFRS(International Financial Reporting Standards) in 2012 year. H Motor Company, S Electronics and L Electronics are the three representative firms adopting K-GAAP and K-IFRS in Korea. The x2 homogeneous test are used to identify the reduction of the number of account items of four financial statements such as Statement of Financial Position(SFP), Statement of Comprehensive Income(SCI), Statement of Cash Flow(SCF), and Statement of Change in Equity(SCE) between K-GAAP and K-IFRS.

In the global trend toward economic integration, Vietnamese enterprises desire to attract investment and increase competitiveness in the global market, so they have been required to provide transparent, high-quality financial reports following the International Financial Reports Standards (IFRS). Based on the roadmap drawn by the Vietnam Ministry of Finance, the foreign-invested enterprises, listed enterprises and state-owned enterprises will be applying IFRS in 2030. However, some enterprises in Vietnam have applied IFRS in the presentation of financial statements at the request of related parties for a while. The main research objective of this paper focused on examining the factors affecting the implementation of IFRS in Vietnamese enterprises through descriptive statistics tools, Cronbach’s Alpha testing, EFA and logistics regression analysis with the sample collected from 254 Vietnamese enterprises. The methodology in this research was the mixed qualitative and quantitative method. The results show that the higher the profitability, debt ratio and firm size of the enterprise, the more likely it is to apply IFRS. From the results of this study, the appropriate recommendations have been made to promote the implementation of IFRS by Vietnamese enterprises effectively and following the IFRS application roadmap of the Ministry of Finance of Vietnam.

This study examines whether the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) has increased financial statement comparability among firms and reduced undervaluation of Korean firms in the capital market by enhancing financial statement comparability. The so-called Korea Discount, which indicates an inefficient allocation of capital, has been attributed to lack of transparency and comparability of accounting information. Therefore, an efficient distribution of capital in the market was intended when IFRS was first adopted in Korea, but such progress is based on a premise of enhancement in Korean firms’ accounting information comparability. This study conducts empirical analysis by using a comparability measure by De Franco et al. (2011). More specifically, it analyzes differences among comparability of domestic firms following IFRS adoption, with firms in the EU, which adopted IFRS in 2005, and with firms in the U.S., China and Japan that do not follow IFRS. The analysis of changes in domestic firms’ comparability finds that their comparability improved following IFRS adoption. Meanwhile, the examination of cross-national differences in comparability demonstrates that, although there has been no significant change in comparability with firms in the U.S. and the EU across Korean industry since IFRS adoption, comparability with China has decreased while that with Japan improved.

The study examines the effect of environmental factors on the international harmonization process of accounting on small and medium enterprises in Vietnam. These factors include legal environment, business environment, and cultural environment. The data is collected by a survey of 100 accountants and 100 auditors on the factors that affects the international harmonization process of accounting. The T-Tests indicate differences between the answers of the accountants and auditors. First, for the accountants, legal environment has the biggest effect on the harmonization process of accounting; while on the auditors, business environment has the biggest influence. Second, while the accountants consider costs higher than benefits in the harmonization process of accounting, the auditors assume that benefits are superior to costs that businesses spend. Third, both the accountants and the auditors indicate that the harmonization process of accounting should not be applied for all small and medium enterprises. From the study results, the author has given a different evaluation method that Vietnam should implement for international harmonization with the required adjustments as per the suitability with the status of businesses in Vietnam. The process of harmonization in accounting practices should not be indiscriminately applied to all the small and medium enterprises either.

This study analyzed the association between IFRS adjustments, measured with the IFRS reconciliations, and the subsequent meeting of target earnings. IFRS adjustments include the amounts to be adjusted intentionally, as well as the differences in accounting standards. This study estimated intentional IFRS adjustments and analyzed their association with meeting target earnings. As the results of our analysis, meeting target earnings was associated positively with intentional IFRS adjustments for the total assets, was negatively associated with them for current assets, and was positively associated with them for non-current assets. Since understatement of current assets can be realized into earnings in a short period of time, it seems that current assets were underestimated intentionally in order to meet target earnings subsequently. In contrast, it is considered that non-current assets were overestimated to make them more likely to meet target earnings either by increasing the firm size or by improving financial solvency. The results of this study imply that IFRS adjustments are useful to manage earnings for meeting target earnings. Since accounting standards may be established and revised constantly, which adjustments for them may occur, the results on IFRS adjustments are expected to have implications for investors, policy-makers, and standards establishment entities.
