In this study, Monopis zagulajevi Gaedike, 2000 is reported for the first time from Korea. Illustrations of adults and genitalia are presented, with species descriptions. Also, Korean checklist of genus Monopis is provided.
Two sibling species of the genus Monopis Hübner are collected in Jeju Island, with one of them reported for the first time from Korea. The genus currently comprises approximately 100 named species, which are widespread and diverse throughout the Old World, but poorly represented in the New World. Many species of the genus Monopis have been reported in bird nests, feces, and wool products. The larvae of these moths feed on keratin and chitin sources, such as feather, pellet and guano. The adults are briefly described, illustrated and compared, including the male and female genitalia.
Two species of genus Monopis (M. pavlovskii, M. congestella) from detritus were found in raptorial bird cage. We used feather-traps that include detritus of raptorial bird, each two traps deployed at Mt.Gyeyang in Incheon and Mt.Cheonchuk in Uljin, respectively. Larvae of tineid feed on keratin sources in the detritus of the raptorial bird cage such as pellets, furs, and feathers. Biological information regarding M. pavlovskii and M. congestella and photographs of their immature stage are provided. It is likely that detritus of raptorial bird cage provide a suitable habitat for keratophagous tineids in nature because of a wide variety of keratin in the raptorial bird cage.
