In the flora of this area, Korean endemic plants were six taxa, and 33 taxa of specially designated floristic regional indicator plants by the Ministry of Environment. The red list of vascular plants according to International Union for Conservation of Nature valuation basis were three taxa. The naturalized plants were 31 taxa including Erigeron philadelphicus L., Tragopogon dubius Scop., Phleum pratense L., and so forth.

This study was conducted to understand damage effects of Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) on the seedlings of Evergreen Oak (Quercus acuta) with the cutting of main stems before planted at Jeju Experimental Forests. Six plots in size of 20 × 20 m had been setup from the middle to the end of March, 2007, and planting after cutting the main stems of seedlings had been conducted to increase survival rate of the seedlings, and we monitored experimental and control plots to know the damage effects of the deers. Experimental plots were designed at the width of 3 m fields after clear-cutting, and they was adjacent with the buffer zone in size of 2 m covered with vegetation covers. Seedlings were planted at interval of 1 x 1 m, they were at 8 rows and 20 lines per plot. Two rows among them had been treated as half cutting at main stems. Total 647 seedlings had been planted, 168 seedlings were belong to half cutting's plots and 479 were to control plots. As a result, half cutting did not increase the survival rate of seedlings, and it increases the ratio of deer damage. Damaged seedlings showed significantly the lower height than undamaged did. Therefore, it would indicate that planting the seedlings over 90 cm in height would decrease the damage from deer at study areas. And, we suggest the damage factors on Quercus acuta as apical bud grazing, bark rubbing, and leaf grazing, we made the flow chart to decide the damage factors in the field.

Biodiversity has globally declined because of various drivers, and the loss of biodiversity encroaches ecosystem services resulting in more serious socio-economic and environmental problems in low-income or underdeveloped countries where local livelihood is highly dependent on ecosystem services. Official Development Assistance (ODA) from developed countries may help address the negative drivers of biodiversity loss. However, little researches on ODA related to biodiversity issues in the Republic of Korea are available. This study was conducted to review the current status of ODA related with biodiversity issues provided by Korea. We used ‘Green ODA’ guided by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and ’Creditor Reporting System (CRS)’ code of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to identify and analyze biodiversity-related ODAs. As a result, ODAs for biodiversity provided by Korea were belonged to two of five categories of the Green ODA. The total amount of the overall ODAs and Green ODAs have increased steadily since the 2000s. However, the amount of biodiversity-related ODAs had greatly changed over time, and its proportion to overall ODA budgets had remained low. This may be largely because the ODAs for biodiversity had been implemented on a short-term basis, not for systematic long-term projects. In order to meet the global trend for biodiversity conservation, it is necessary to expand the total amount of ODAs for biodiversity, establish long-term plans, and maintain the continuity of biodiversity-related ODA projects.

The purpose of this study is to present the basic data for ecological management and landscape improvement of recreation forest by surveying and analysing the vascular plants around Gosan recreation forest, Jeollabuk-do. The vascular plants were summarized as 520 taxa including 117 families, 315 genera, 455 species, 5 subspecies, 48 varieties, 11 forms and 1 hybrid. The endangered plants were 2 taxa including Saururus chinensis and Abeliophyllum distichum. The rare plants were 10 taxa including Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii, Epimedium koreanum, Corylopsis gotoana var. coreana, Alangium platanifolium and so forth. The Korean endemic plants were 12 taxa including Clematis trichotoma, Philadelphus schrenkii, Indigofera koreana, Weigela subsessilis and so forth. The specific plants by floristic region were 49 taxa including 5 taxa of grade V, 4 taxa of grade IV, 12 taxa of grade III, 6 taxa of grade II and 22 taxa of grade I. The naturalized plants were 40 taxa including Rumex crispus, Euphorbia supina, Aster novibelgii, Centaurea cyanus, Eragrostis curvula and so forth. The invasive alien plants were 3 taxa including Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Aster pilosus and Lactuca scariola. The invasive alien plants are required to be constantly removed, as they may adversely affect nearby natural vegetation disturbances, natural landscape changes, as well as visitors.

In this study, total mercury (THg) variations of Black-tailed Gull (Larus crassirostris) eggs laid on Baengnyeongdo, West Sea of Korea were compared between within- and among clutch in order to ensure statistical representativeness of an egg sampling method. In the ANOVA analysis, the THg variation (59%) among clutches was much higher than within-clutch (27%). This means that the mercury variation of sampled eggs was significantly influenced by the mercury variation among female individuals occupying different nests. In spite of relatively smaller variation of THg in the within-clutch, the THg concentration depending on an egg-laying sequence within a clutch significantly appeared higher in the first-laid eggs rather than the second-laid eggs. Therefore, it is necessary to take one egg from one nest in order to sample more nests in terms of better sampling representativeness. Also, one egg selection from one nest should be consistently applied in order to ensure comparability of mercury concentrations among monitoring sites and monitoring years.

As an endemic species in Korea Adenophora erecta S. Lee, Joongku Lee et S. Kim is distributed in a restricted area of Ulleung island. In this study, we confirmed finding only about 60 individuals in Taeha-ryeung in an area measuring 900 m² in size. These data together with previously collected data indicate that this species is in the “Critically Endangered (CR)” category based on taxon evaluation criteria of the IUCN. We propagated this species using seeds of transplanted plant from a site where this plant was first found. The best seed germination was observed in a batch treated with GA3 (500 mg/L) under the sun light and the best plant growth was observed in a bed of nursery soil and rough-sand soil (1:1). The original habitat of A. erecta in Sukpo-dong was successfully restored by transplantation of the propagated young plants.
