Marine algal flora of three uninhabited islands of Sipidongpado, located in the middle western coast of Korea were investigated in regarding the floristic composition and vertical distribution at intertidal zone during July 2008. A total of 27 marine algal species (3 green, 8 brown and 16 red algae) was identified from the three islands. Among them, 15 species occurred at Byeongpungdo, 17 at Keunssangseom, 22 at Deungdaeseom. Eleven species were found at all three islands: Ulva pertusa, Ulva conglobata, Hizikia fusiformis, Sargassum thunbergii, Gelidium divaricatum, Corallina pilulifera, Caulacanthus ustulatus, Chondria crassicaulis, Polysiphonia morrowii, Symphyocladia latiuscula and Symphyocladia linearis. The total biomass of macroalgae in July at Deungdaeseom was 2,387.2 gm−2. Dominant species was S. thunbergii showing highest biomass (1,512.1 gm−2) in the intertidal zones at Deungdaeseom. Thus we can conclude that S. thunbergii is the representative species of this island.
The natural environment of Gulup-do should be preserved due to its unique ecological characteristics. A recent report stated that CJ group, one of Korea’s major business conglomerates (chaebols), plans to construct golf courses and resort facilities in Gulup-do. Such projects will destroy the delicate animal habitats of the island. The harmful chemical runoff from golf courses will also significantly damage the ecosystem. The purpose of this paper is to show that the development of Gulup-do will adversely affect the ecology of the island.
The spatial and temporal distributions of phosphorus and nitrogen and a number of physical, chemical and biological parameters were analyzed to in the Youngsan and the Sumjin River systems, Korea. Substantial amount of P and N was observed in both the rivers all the year round. Mean N/P ratios showed large variations among the sampling sites; highest ratio was observed in most sampling sites during summer. Relative proportions of DOP: TP were fairly constant (0.08~0.09) in both the rivers. In the composition of nitrogen almost all sampling sites of both the rivers were dominated with NO3-N followed by NH3-N and NO2-N. Variations in dissolved nutrients tended to co-vary with particulate forms (PON and POP), implying that dissolved nutrients are primarily released from the decomposition of particulate forms or dissolved forms are in equilibrium with particulate forms. Chlorophyll a levels in the Sumjin River appear to be negatively correlated with the ammonia, implying ammonia is absorbed by algae with preference. While chlorophyll a was positively correlated with TP and DIP in the Sumjin River, negative correlations of these parameters was observed in the Youngsan River. The pattern of nutrients level was found to be related with land use and domestic sewage in the study area. Inter-parameter relationships may be strongly influenced by geographical factors relative to temporal factors.
Water resources in Republic of Korea have been mainly supplied by the artificial reservoirs and lakes due to severely unbalanced rainfall. rainfall through the year. The lakes and reservoirs in which littoral zones have been damaged in a dry season usually have a big difference between high and low water level. In this study, We examined the effects of artificial floating island (AFI) in the Lake Baekgoki at Jin-Cheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. Phytoplankton is flora as 29 genera and 39 species, and the dominant species were Synedra acus, Lyngbya sp. and Cryptomonas sp., etc. The plankton numbers gradually decreased after installation of the AFI. In contrast with the phytoplankton, zooplankton individuals increased under the AFI, offering the habitats for zooplankton. Fish fauna were three families and seven species and 76 individuals were counted the AFI. The artificial vegetated island showed the significant effects on the restoration of lake ecosystem.
This survey was carried out to investigate herpetofauna in 22 Islands, Incheon. As a result, we have listed 1 order, 5 families, 10 species of amphibians and 1 order 4 families, 12 species of reptiles. Of them, legally protected species are following: Elaphe schrenckii Strauch (Colubridae), Eremias argus Peters (Lacertilidae), Rana plancyi chosenica Okada (Ranidae), Kaloula borealis (Barbour) (Microhylidae). Especially, E. schrenckii was the most abundant in Island Seongap. Islands where endangered species have been found could be protected from further anthropogenic activities.
A study on the possibility of recycling by solidification using tailings from abandoned metal mine were studied. The study was carried out on testing compressive strength of concrete made by different ratio of various mine tailing, chemical speciation of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the tailing by sequential extraction procedure and SPLP leaching test. Mixing of mine tailings with cement or asphalt and aging of mortar gave strong influence on compressive strength of concrete. Marshal's stability of asphalt with tailing waste were higher of 98.0~101.0% than not added one. Therefore it was recommended to use of the tailings to low the infiltlation of the water to protect the bank in the abandoned mine region. Total metals in concrete and asphalt with tailing waste were lower than that of tailing waste. The amount of adsorbed fraction and carbonate fraction which were labile in the aquatic environment were very lower in the concrete and asphalt specimen than mine tailing waste.Leachabilityof studied metals are under the waste management standard.
