Noises in each construction field cause residents in the neighborhood to make complaints due to their high sound pressure level and repetitive, shocking sound. While South Korea regulates construction noises on the basis of legal criteria to minimize the damage from the noises, the regulation only involves a weighted sound level (dB(A)), which is loudness, like other types of noises. It is therefore necessary to make typology of construction noise sources and evaluation vocabularies with the objective of making criteria for regulating construction noises suitable for the South Korean situation. While research based on a survey has been conducted to make typology of construction noise sources and evaluation vocabularies, there have been lots of difficulties in using it to make criteria for regulation because no consideration was given to psychological responses of people. On the basis of the findings from literature review, this study aimed to make typology of construction noise sources and vocabularies through a psycho-acoustic experiment and analyze the psychological characteristics and meanings of construction noises more accurately. The respondents’ psychological responses to construction noise sources were grouped into three factors ‘normal, shocking, and fluctuating noises’ and into ― ― six factors ‘annoying,’ ‘loud,’ ‘confusing,’ ‘noisy,’ ‘alarming,’ and ‘boisterous’ in terms of evaluation ― ― vocabularies. Since the factor with the biggest eigenvalue drawn from the respondents’ psychological responses is most important, the most important influential factor in evaluating construction noises was ‘normal noises’ for construction noise sources and ‘annoyance’ for evaluation vocabularies. This typology is expected to be useful to make and revise criteria for regulating construction noises.

In advanced countries, various policies are being enforced to reduce equipment noise level at it’s source. This paper analyses the problems of domestic noise policies related to noisy equipment, and presents a plan for improving the implementation of expansion policy of low noise equipment based on this analysis. This paper proposes that the equipment satisfying the compulsory rule be able to use the environmental certification mark, the standards of which are defined in recommended rules, to improve the linkage between the two policy measures. This paper also suggests expanding the range of equipment to be supervised and using new noise label that has grades and shows detailed noise level of the equipment to improve environmental certification system. In addition, supplementing the construction permission system and supporting international certification system are offered to expand the use of low noise equipment.

This Paper deals with the measurement and analysis of the brake squeal noise, the wheel’s and block brake’s vibration. The squeal noise, a kind of self-excited vibration, is generated by the friction between the rim of the revolving wheel and the block brake. The goal of this paper is to investigate experimental the relation between brake squeal noise and vibration mode of railway wheel with block brake to the track of friction surface on tread of railway wheel and the tread rake angle of railway wheel. Experimental results with Mode Analysis and Run Mode Analysis show that vibration mode of railway wheel with block brake is related with brake squeal noise.

Quiet environment is essential for improving quality of living and rest. For example, noisy neighbors degrade quality of sleeping of residents. Due to emphasis on energy saving of buildings, more insulation and tighter sealing is applied for windows, doors, and walls of new buildings. As results, not only energy dissipation of new building is reduced, but also interior of new buildings have become significantly quieter. However, sound and heat insulation performance of existing buildings is relatively worse, when compared to that of recent buildings. As elapse of time, gap between bricks or concrete of building and sealing grows larger, worsening of sound and heat insulation performance of buildings is unavoidable. To provide quiet room for quality control of products or other purposes in noisy environment, indoor noise chamber is required in practice. In present work, sound transmission through indoor noise chamber is measured using different noise sources. For the worst case, noise source and sound transmission of door slam noise is shown.

This paper describes a prototype mechanical white noise generator has a source level of more than 170.0 dB (re 1µPa at 1 m) at the frequency range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz. The results of performance evaluation of the generator are as follows. The average source level of the generator measured by a step of 15°in horizontal (0 to 360。, 25 points) was 185.2 (SD (standard deviation): 2.3) dB (re 1µPa at 1 m). The maximum and minimum source levels were appeared at the frequency range of 2.5 to 5.0 kHz and around 100 kHz, respectively. The average source levels at 0°, 90。, 180。and 270° were 162.9 (SD: 10.6), 168.4 (SD: 10.0), 162.1 (SD: 9.1) and 166.5 (SD: 11.1) dB (re 1µPa at 1 m). The average source level measured by a step of 30° in vertical was 184.9 (SD: 2.2) dB (re 1µPa at 1 m). The relative maximum variation width of the source levels in horizontal and in vertical measurement were less than 7.0 dB and 1.0 dB, respectively.

Noise barriers along the road do not only block the traffic noise but also prevent traversing the car exhausts. These barriers may affect air pollution dispersion, leading to increase vertical mixing due to the upwind deflection of air flow caused by the noise barriers. In this study we investigated the air pollution dispersion around multi-noise barriers using commercial software FLUENT. Investigated cases were 8 cases which had from zero to three noise barriers and two emission sources. Simulated results show noise barriers increase the vertical air pollution impact distance larger 1.7~2.1 times than that of no barrier case. It was also found that noise barriers decrease the horizontal air pollution impact distance lower 0.6~0.8 times than that of no barrier case.

Wind turbine noise become main environmental problem as wind energy have been installed all around. Noise from large wind turbine give annoyance to listener, moreover it increase loading to whole system by restricting blade tip speed. However accurate noise mechanism of wind turbine is not yet examined. This paper reviewed noise source and analysis theory. Broadband noise is main component of wind turbine noise and airfoil self noise is main noise source. These make acoustic analogy hard to apply for analysis. For this reason, experimental equation is method for wind turbine noise prediction up to now. Spectrum analysis shows that vortex shedding noise exists around 1 k~2 k Hz. This region is most sensitive frequency range to human. Thus it is necessary to reduce this noise source.
