현재 디지털 콘텐츠의 저작권 보호를 위해 사용되고 있는 DRM 기술은‘네트워크 상에서 전달 받은 콘텐츠를 특정 기기에서 일정 기간 동안 사용할 수 있도록 하는 권한 제한 기술’로 인식되고 있다. 이러한 DRM기능은 디지털 기기의 확산과 보편화로 향후 동일 기기에서의 기능 확장, 동종 기기에서의 호환, 이종기기로의 기능확장과 호환으로 사용자의 요구 조건을 더욱 많이 수용할 수 있도록 변화하게 될 것으로 보인다. 이용자의 입장에서는 암호화 기술과 라이센스 발급에 기반을 두고 있는 DRM이 풀린 콘텐츠 배급이야말로 사용자 편익이 가장 높아지는 경우가될 것이다. 그러나 그러한 경우에도 저작권 보호를 위한 넓은 의미에서의 DRM기술들이 적용될 가능성이 높다. 예를 들어 불법 사용자 추적을 위한 워터마크 기술과, 불법 콘텐츠를 식별하기 위해 사용되는 핑거프린팅 기술이 암호화 기술과 라이센스 시스템을 대체하는 넓은 의미의 DRM기술로 사용될 것으로 예측된다. 본고에서는 최근의 업계 동향을 반영한 사용자 편익을 증진할 수 있는 DRM 기술의 구현 기능과 확장된 DRM 기술에 대한 정의를 기반으로 향후의 DRM기술 추세와 전망에 대해 논의한다.
