A portable GPS receiver and a navigation software were used to investigate land application practices of manure composts. The field investigation indicated that most of the land application of manure composts were observed before April. Plowing for incorporation of manure with soil were continued from the middle of April. The results also revealed that over 60% of the farms were within 1 km from livestock farms from which manure composts were transported. Most of the farms having land application were dry field rather than paddies, Some of fields located near livestock farms frequently experience over-application of manure composts. It seems to have been difficult to complete the investigation in this study without the Gps/navigation system. The GPS/navigation system will become an essential tool in field investigations such as ecological/environmental monitoring works that require repeated observation at a number of sites.

Runoff and water quality was monitored from a watershed with small-scale livestock production farms. To evaluate pollution potential, land use, population, the size of livestock production of each farm, and livestock management method were surveyed. Climate and stream flow data were measured. Water samples were taken periodically for base flow conditions and some storm events. Pollutant loading was estimated by flow volume and concentrations of constituents. Delivery ratio of pollutant load was determined using estimated pollutant load.

The meaning of the lay of the houses - traditional dwellings- was discussed and its application in the rural village was surveyed, The azimuth of the houses is considered to the direction of a sun and the house facing south is best. It was identified that Palwang village grove is very good in conservation state, but Taechon village grove has been destructed mostly by various development. It was identified that Palwang village grove is high in species diversity and in scare value as mixed forest, landscape value. The dominent tree of Palwang village was Pinus densiflora and that of Taechon was Salix glandulosa. Salix glandulosa was used pavilion tree, main tree in both village. It was identified that Carpinus tschonoskii is showing the most rapid growth in tree height and Salix glandulosa is showing the most rapid growth in tree breadth diameter of all kind of tree. It was considered that Pinus densiflora was planted first of all and deciduous trees were complemented later. It was considered that simple forest of Pinus densiflora has been changed into mixed forest by artificial affect in the long term. It was considered that Salix glandulosa in Palwang village grove must be indicated as legal protection tree according to present criteria of protection tree selection in Korea. And it is considered desirable that standing stone of penis form and village grove in Palwang village must be indicated unitedly as cultural conservation element.

A village appraisal is a study of the village, carried out by the people who live there as a basis for influencing its future. It is an exciting opportunity for a village to take a good look at itself, and it is a project in which everyone can be involved. It involves gathering factual information and the opinions of local people, so as to build up an overall picture of the village. An appraisal is a questionnaire survey carried out by and for the local community. It aims to identify local characteristics, problems, needs, threats, strengths and opportunities. It is a means of taking stock of the community and of creating a sound foundation of awareness and understanding on which to base future community action. Over the past 30 years more than 2,000 village appraisals have been undertaken in rural Britain. This research examined 48 village appraisals which had been carried out in England between 1985 and 1999. The suggested strengths and weaknesses of the village appraisals are: the target of the whole population in an area; the wide-ranging in its coverage of issues; well linked to a county-wide support agency; a good tool for identifying needs and wants, and local priorities; a good tool of local democracy and of increasing self-confidence in individuals and the whole community; not an exhaustive survey; very labour intensive; too little coverage of issues relating to the local economy; the lack of any input by professional planners and so forth.

Animal manure and manure compost produced from livestock farms are widely applied in crop lands. Leachate and runoff water from them are presumed to be one of the major sources of water quality deterioration in rural streams. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate water quality characteristics and loading of leachate obtained under rainfall simulation. Manure composts for the experiments were collected from beef cattle farms, dairy farms, and pig farms. Water quality parameters include SS, COD, TN, and TP. Most parameters of leachate from pig manure compost was higher than others. Both TN and TP concentrations were reflecting the composition of manure itself. It is recommended, therefore that the leachate from the manure composts should be controlled not to be discharged into streams.

This study attempted to proposed the strategies for development of peach packinghouses. The overview of the conditions of existing peach packinghouses located Chongdo county was provided. Then, the grading system of packinghouse was newly suggested. In empirical analysis, the optimal size, location, and equipments were taken into account for the case of establishing new packinghouse. The main finding of this study was that the planning and construction of peach packinghouse should be executed in accordance with the regional peculiarities. Specifically, First, the packinghouse could make higher profit by high-quality goods using realistic grading/standardization. It would be preferred by customers that the effective itemization of fruits like peach. Second, it would be necessary that the scale of packinghouse was examinated in the county or town level. Third, in order to make an effective management of the packinghouse, several alternatives for operation were suggested. Also the software of packinghouse should be arranged to satisfy the packinghouse, producers, and customers.
