Shannon and Simpson indexes are used for species diversity analysis of ecosystem. In species diversity analysis of ecosystem, not only frequency of each species but also survey size have to be considered. In this study, total information composed with knowledge and ignorance was suggested as a species diversity analysis method for ecosystem survey. To apply developed method, flora in the Sangachun river valley was sampled with 19 sites and 198 species. In applying results, Shannon index shows more reasonable results than Simpson index by the variance of sample size but has difficulties of determining the relation of surveying species number and sample site number. Suggested total information can overcome this difficulty by the relation of knowledge and ignorance.

This study aims to develop an evaluation method of green-tourism potential in village level with amenity resources of rural villages, considering human resources of the village. The amenity resources evaluation system was classified into three sub-classes with social, industrial, and natural resources. The system consisted of a relationship diagram between three classes resources and tourists' behavior. The new methodology considers human resources as a key factor for green-tourism potential evaluation of villages, including the amenity resources of three sub-classes. In quantitative method for the criteria, this study adopted a new method of continuous linear score method, which is applying fuzzy theory, not to give score with the existing discrete scoring method with several steps. The weighting values of the evaluation criteria were calculated from the step wise pair-comparision results by AHP(Analytic Hierachy Process) method, which industrial, natural, and social resources have relative weighting values of 523/1000, 319/1000, and 158/1000, respectively. In evaluation of another weighting value by the same methodology, the results showed that the amenity and the human resources have weighting values of 627/100 and 373/1000, respectively. The new evaluation method was applied to make the potential evaluation for rural villages of the study area, which located on Narial-myun, Keumsan-gun, Chungnam province. The development priority among the villages could be suggested reasonably by the new findings of this study, according to the evaluation results showing that the village with high possibility for development in green-tourism has high score in the potential evaluation.

This study aims to develop a rational evaluation system which consists of the selection of evaluation items and the estimation of its weight for the Enhancement Program of the Quality of Life for Farmers and Fishermen and Rural Development. This system has two hierarchical steps. The first step shows the evaluation goals which are relevance, efficiency and effectiveness of the program. The second step stands for the evaluation items which have 11 sub-items such as necessity and externalization for the program, rationality of procedures, feedback and monitoring system, budgetary allocations, information activities, impacts on the program, achievements of the goals and so on. A tentative evaluation system was proposed by brainstorming and Delphi method of expert-group. Weighting values of evaluation items were calculated through pair-comparison works of expert group using stepwise matrix sheets by AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process).

This study, a sub-one of comprehensive research work titled under "A Evaluation System of Amenity / Disamenity Elements in Rural Villages", tried to propose a rational methodology for development of rating tabulation for evaluation of amenity / disamenity elements in rural villages. The system developed in the study has the formalized rating grades between 2 and 5 for convenience/simplification of analysis work. For each evaluation element in the lowest order of the system, 5 types of rating technique were arranged, which were based on statistical analysis using mean and standard deviation values, its existence or not, relative significance of its holding volume and quality, synthesized weight scale of its quality and quantity, and the others. And, standardized 4-steps procedure for rating tabulation was proposed. Finally, through case studies of 4 sample villages representing the flat-plain, upland, seashore and periurban rural areas, the applicability of this rating tabulation system was verified.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the development of Silhak as a Korean epistemology, to investigate the implications of Silhak in Korean society, and to discover further environmental implications. The main discussion of this paper concerns with the epistemology of environmental philosophy. Epistemology is based on the justification of certain knowledge and social philosophy. Epistemology, from the Greek words episteme (knowledge) and logos (word/ speech) is the branch of philosophy concerned with theories of the sources, nature, and limits of knowledge. Since the seventeenth century, epistemology has been one of the fundamental themes of philosophers, who were necessarily obliged to coordinate the theory of knowledge with the development of scientific thought. It is a general belief that Western ideology is substantially embedded in Eastern ideology due to physical and metaphysical colonial involvement. We argue that ecological crisis may be resulted from western epistemological mechanical view, thus we suggests a Korean epistemology as an alternative. In this paper, we seek possibility of epistemological alternative of nature in the Korean traditional epistemology incorporating the epistemology of Sung confucianism and The Silhak.

The purpose of this paper is to estimate the economic value of Multi-functionality Roles including landscape and so on, which traditional stone fences in Korea possess, using Dichotomous Choice Contingent Valuation Method (DC-CVM). The stone fences is life cultural heritance of regional residents. It has functions like Development of Favorable Landscapes, Maintenance of Cultural Heritage, and Recreation/Relaxation. Expectation from regional visitors shows that the existence and inheritance value of the stone wall is higher then we expected. According to the research that we had done from the people that had agreed to contribute the stone wall. moreover the public commercial value of regional tradition stone was not only 2,900 billion won but also it will increase an economic gain in every year. Therefore, preserving the stone wall that has Multi-functional Roles and values can lead to huge economic value in the future. But farmhouses in the stone wall conservation area are being supported 9 billion won in every year. This is only 0.03% of the income that farmhouse earns per year. Thus, stone wall preservation policy and plan can raise green-tour commercial value of inland area as a long-term inside measurement. Those will have to be propelled continuously.

This study aims to develop rural house maintenance technique by researching and analyzing the demand for rural house by urban retirees or urbanites who are planning to retire. The target for the survey consisted of urban retirees or urbanites who are planning to retire at the ages between 40 and 65, and were divided into group A, the attendants in rural-related education, and group B, the non-attendants in rural-related education. The contents of the survey included the plan and purpose for rural settlement, the utilization form or residential form of rural house and its expected size, necessary in-house facilities, necessary community facilities, improvement and maintenance factors of rural house, political and legal support for the application of rural house maintenance, etc. The results findings of this study are as follows; 1)For both group, the major purpose of rural settlement appeared to be 'for rural life', utilization form of rural house to be 'acquired ownership or use of empty house', residential form to be 'cohabitation', expected size to be 'under 20~30 pung', and expenditure to be 'under 50~100 million'. 2)Most wanted necessary in-house facilities included backyard, multipurpose storage room for group A, and backyard, garden for group B. Necessary community facilities included boardwalk, sewage disposal unit for group A, and boardwalk, shop for group B. 3)Improvement factor for rural house showed 'poor insulation' as first factor for both groups, and for maintenance factor, 'backyard', 'under-floor heating' for group A, and 'environmental-friendly materials', 'backyard' for group B. 4)Most wanted overall political and legal support included 'support on land and real estate supply' for group A, and 'medical and transportation service' for group B. For both group, most wanted support when purchasing a house included 'provision of information on house and realestate purchase', and for legal support, 'legal support for guaranteed house and maintenance' as first factor. The results of this study could be utilized to restructure the rural residence, which would meet the diverse demand of both rural residents and urbanites by providing an opportunity for urbanites to enjoy rural life.

Rural amenity resources show a particular rural community's identity. They also provide recreational, aesthetic and economic value. This research aimed at systematizing finding surveying techniques of rural amenity resources for planning rural community. For conducting the study, existing finding and surveying techniques of rural amenity resources in the case of comprehensive Amenity Planning of Seochen County in Choongcheongnam Province. The research findings are as followings; (1) 190 amenity resources were found in Seochen County, (2) archival research and interview methods were used for finding resources, (3) the present status and maintenance conditions were examined through on-the-spot survey, (4) resources were photographed and recorded by making descriptive notes verbally and diagrammatically.

This study aims to show how the urbanization of Korea has progressed for the last three decades, what its characteristics are, and how rural land use has changed by the national and district(cities and counties) level. The land use changes accompanying to the urbanization is analyzed through 3 indicators such as urbanization rate, the rate of cultivated and forest land and the rate of urbanized area. The statistical data are 30 years from 1976 to 2005 for time series analysis by the national level, and are for the two years of 1995 and 2005 by the district level. The relationship between urbanization and land use changes in the national level is analyzed using statistical analysis(Correlation Analysis). In order to analyze the dynamic and spatial urbanization and land use changes effectively in the district level, Z-score, Paired T-test, Correlation Analysis, Analysis of Variance and Chi-squire Test are used. The results show negative correlation between urbanization rate and the rate of cultivated and forest land, and positive correlation between urbanization rate and the rate of urbanized area respectively. In the aspect of the change of urbanization rate, four categories are examined. In addition, four types are characterized on the basis of the rate of cultivated and forest land and the rate of urbanized area between 1995 from 2005.

Allotment gardens with log house in rural area as a rural growth tool are able to adapt to current market mechanisms by communication and promotion techniques. It is important to know what and how allotment garden's users seek their benefits to market segmentations. The primary purpose of this study was to segment and profile the benefits of allotment garden's potential users so as to provide a better understanding of allotment garden in Korea. A self-administered survey was obtained from 298 allotment gardens users in the study area. Four distinct segments were identified based on the benefits; relaxer(23.7%), educator(21.9%), want-it-all gardener(42.3%), and grower(12.2%), and these were profiled with respect to socio-demographics and civic garden-related features. We suggest that the relaxers are target market of allotment gardens with log house because they have willingly intented to pay a higher rent.

The purpose of study was planning to a rural community space plan for revitalization of aging in rural society and activity of rural older adults. The rural community type was divided 5 categories by local topography characteristics and road system. According to 5 categories, the rural community space plan was consisted of space plan such as consideration for a rural topography characteristics and activity plan by space which analyzed a relations with rural resource and activity of rural older adults. Results from the rural community planning showed that to improve quality of life and to increase in economic productive activity for rural older adults, moreover to lead a retired oppidan migrate from city to country and to make full use of oppidan's intellectual capacity resource.

In this study, We developed an evaluation system for the interim check of Integrated Rural Village Development Project and analyzed its applicability to an actual evaluation process through a pilot evaluation on regions selected. The evaluation system consists of documentary assessments(30%) and field inspections(70%). The documentary assessments are quantitative assessments on check-lists reports by self-evaluation prepared by local governments. The field inspections are qualitative assessments by evaluation teams. Sixteen evaluation indices were developed for documentary assessments and seven criteria were designed for field inspections. For a pilot evaluation, one region in each province excluding Jeju Do, eight regions was selected and the field inspections due to circumstances was proceeded in two regions. The results of documentary assessments indicate that most of regions are evaluated low in project performance attributable to the delay in security for sites. In the field inspections, it appears that most of the regions evaluated high at the documentary assessments got a high point from them. They also show that coordination of action plans, rather than quantitative achievements, is a base determining success of the projects.

Tourism and recreation spots in Korea have been developed metropolitan cities-oriented that facility construction has too much importance in local tourist site development more than satisfaction and experience. Tourism hardly seems to play its role as a motive power even in locals where tourism occupies much in their economic development. Therefore, the ministry of culture & tourism has introduced a plan to discover cultural and tourism resources as a development alternative which handles theme-ability and specialization. However, most projects of local tourism resources developed since 1999 have resulted similar features comparing to previous and existing tourist spots. And the main objectives of this paper have not been realized very well. This research hence forth suggests a program-based model development in tourism resources, with a case study of Gokun-gugok, one of the historical and cultural sites and is located in Hwachon-gun, Gangwon Province. Main points include: Since the Gokun-gugok landscape has been undermined and been loosed the traditional cultural value due to the road development, this study intends to plan to make the adventure of tourism destination including restoring the site as a cultural place. The Gokun-gugok site needs to develop combining various types of tours and adventures with instructive and educational programs to meet the visitors' needs. This research also intends to precede a development plan based on harmonizing natural, historical and cultural assets of the Gokun-gugok with facility maintains and tourism development. Meanwhile, the study stresses on realizing development of tourism resources categorizing programs by seasonality, visitor's economic class, and visit duration. Asa consequence, the research presents a "Culture & Tourism Academy" which deals with these types of adventure programs and informative educations. To assess feasibility of the development plan in terms of economy, environment and policy, the research conducted the site inspection and examined the site's surroundings, land properties and inundation. 145,000 square meters have been extracted as a feasible development area out of total 392,500 square meters. Finally, the study segmentizes target markets basedon the result of the survey on visitors and local residents. The more segmentized markets employ facilities according to their traditional characters.
