규범 문법에서 격조사와 보조사로 논의되어 왔던 ‘이/가’, ‘을/를’, ‘은/는’은 문장문법으로 설명이 불가능한 화용적 양상을 보이며 담화 구성에 관여하는 맥락적 요소에 의해 운용이 결정되기도 한다. 문장은 생성 단계에서부터 발화를 목적으로 하며 고립적으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 담화를 구성하는 단위로서 의도와 목표를 지닌다. 의사소통에 있어 화자는 자신의 의도 즉 메시지를 효과적으로 전달하기 위해 문법적 장치를 사용하는데 화자의 의도를 반영하는 문법적 장치는 통사적 층위를 넘어선 발화조직 층위에서 그 운용이 결정된다고 본다. 규범 문법에서 통사적 구성체로 다루어졌던 ‘이/가’, ‘을/를’, ‘은/는’은 통사 층위뿐만 아니라 발화 조직 층위에서 다루어져야 하는 담화적 구성체이다. ‘이/가’, ‘을/를’, ‘은/는’은 화맥, 화․청자와의 관계, 의식, 전제, 함축 등의 맥락적 요소와 문장의 정보구조에 의해 사용이 결정된다. 따라서 조사의 올바른 이해와 사용을 위해서는 조사의 사용 맥락이 규명되어야 하며 조사 교육에 있어 조사의 사용 맥락이 교수되어야 한다고 본다.

‘lee/ga’, ‘eul/reul’, ‘eun/neun’ that have been discussed as case particle and auxiliary in the standard grammar show the pragmatic aspects that can not be explained by the sentence grammar and their application may be decided by contextual factors involved in discourse configuration. From the stage of creation, a sentence aims at utterance and has the intent and goal as the unit forming discourse, rather than existing isolatedly. In communication, a speaker uses the grammatical device to effectively deliver his/her intentions, that is, a message and in case of the grammatical device reflecting the intention of the speaker, its operation is considered to be determined at the utterance constitution layer beyond the syntactic layer.‘lee/ga’, ‘eul/reul’, ‘eun/neun’ dealt with as syntactic constructs in the standard grammar are discourse constructs that should be dealt with at the utterance constitution layer as well as syntactic layer.The use of ‘lee/ga’, ‘eul/reul’, ‘eun/neun’ is determined by the information structure of sentences and contextual factors of context, relationship between speaker․listener, consciousness, premise, implication etc. Therefore, for a proper understanding and use of postpositions, the use context of postpositions should be identified and the use context of postpositions should be taught in the postposition education.
